Novels
"The free access which many young people have to romances, novels, and plays has poisoned the mind and corrupted the morals of many a promising youth; and prevented others from improving their minds in useful knowledge. Parents take care to feed their children with wholesome diet; and yet how unconcerned about the provision for the mind, whether they are furnished with salutary food, or with trash, chaff, or poison?"
- Reverend Enos Hitchcock, Memoirs of the Bloomsgrove Family, 1790

The Waltz
"The indecent foreign dance called the Waltz was introduced ... at the English Court on Friday last ... It is quite sufficient to cast one's eyes on the voluptuous inter*twining of the limbs, and close com*pressure of the bodies ... to see that it is far indeed removed from the modest reserve which has hitherto been considered distinctive of English females. So long as this obscene display was con*fined to prostitutes and adulteresses, we did not think it deserving of notice; but now that it is ... forced on the respectable classes of society by the evil example of their superiors, we feel it a duty to warn every parent against exposing his daughter to so fatal a contagion."
- The Times of London, 1816

Movies
"This new form of entertainment has gone far to blast maidenhood ... Depraved adults with candies and pennies beguile children with the inevitable result. The Society has prosecuted many for leading girls astray through these picture shows, but GOD alone knows how many are leading dissolute lives begun at the 'moving pictures.'"
- The Annual Report of the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, 1909

The Telephone
"Does the telephone make men more active or more lazy? Does [it] break up home life and the old practice of visiting friends?"
- Survey conducted by the Knights of Columbus Adult Education Committee, San Francisco Bay Area, 1926

Comic Books
"Many adults think that the crimes described in comic books are so far removed from the child's life that for children they are merely something imaginative or fantastic. But we have found this to be a great error. Comic books and life are connected. A bank robbery is easily translated into the rifling of a candy store. Delinquencies formerly restricted to adults are increasingly committed by young people and children ... All child drug addicts, and all children drawn into the narcotics traffic as messengers, with whom we have had contact, were inveterate comic-book readers This kind of thing is not good mental nourishment for children!"
- Fredric Wertham, Seduction of the Innocent, 1954

Rock and Roll
"The effect of rock and roll on young people, is to turn them into devil worshippers; to stimulate self-expression through sex; to provoke lawlessness; impair nervous stability and destroy the sanctity of marriage. It is an evil influence on the youth of our country."
- Minister Albert Carter, 1956

Videogames
"The disturbing material in Grand Theft Auto and other games like it is stealing the innocence of our children and it's making the difficult job of being a parent even harder ... I believe that the ability of our children to access pornographic and outrageously violent material on video games rated for adults is spiraling out of control."
- US senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, 2005

wow some of these conservative naysayers were obvious lunatics

so censorship of new media forms isnt exclusive to video games/music ...in some cases the rhetoric is slightly toned down but the message is clear: if your child is playing videogames, he WILL be corrupted

oh and people who say that we shouldnt worry because sooner or later these loons will die out to be replaced by a new generation who embraces video games ...200 years of censorship history proves you wrong

A bunch of commie bastards:frown:

He's right yer know.

Anyway, no shit Sherlock. But it's very useful as a defence. :p

Wouldn't this prove us right? When was the last time you heard a neocon bitching about the telephone? I think once the halo croud takes office, we'll have little to worry about when it comes to videogames.

yes well the telephone has been around for over a hundred years ...ask me again in a hundred years or so ...oh and if HL2 is any indication of how future generations will think, conservatism isnt going anywhere

music is often revisted, as are movies and other forms of media (anyone remember the attempt by religious wackos to ban Harry Potter because it glorified witchcraft? or how about Sponge Bob's hidden homosexual agenda?, or the attempts by some groups to ban the Da Vinci Code?) ...no, they havent gone away, they just lie dormant till it's time to pounce

You're always going to have people complaining about something. Can't change that. Doesn't mean we're going to be seeing a bunch of censorship towards anything in the future. I just...don't see it happening.

it already does happen

or adults, the fuss over a PBS children's television show featuring an animated bunny - and real lesbian mothers - was nothing new. But for Emma Riesner, 11, who was supposed to be a star of the now-controversial episode of "Postcards From Buster," what began as a participatory social studies lesson has become a harsh lesson in exclusionary politics.

"I was pretty upset when the show was canceled, because I was very excited about it," Emma said in a telephone interview from her home in Vermont. "I know some people don't like gays and lesbians because they think they are bad people. That's just a stereotype and it's kind of hurtful. I don't think people should think of us as very different. We are just the same except we have two moms."

PBS decided last week not to distribute the program to about 350 stations amid objections from various quarters, including a strongly worded disapproval from the new education secretary, Margaret Spellings

Yes, I remember that story. It made me quite sick. I know there's some things that this will happen to. It's unfortunate. But, as national as it was in the 40s and 50s? I don't see it happening.

Evehl Nazi censorists D: (Sorry Stern, staunch conservatives just doesn't have that "evehl" tone to it, you know? :p)

you really try to sound like a fascist huh?
I talked to alot of S.Koreans since I came here, very liberal people, maybe they came here so they can get away from people like you.

I agree with censorship because there are some things that 12 year olds do NOT need to know about (ie porn, ogrsih, communsim, ect.). But I do not agree with religous censorship, because everybody has a right to his own religion. I think that the stability of a entire nation is massively more important than the right to know.

YOU'RE BACK! YAY!

And not really......

Yeah, the traitors to the republic, they are. :frown: They ran away so that the NIS wouldn't crack down on them. They prolly even didn't do military conscription, most likely evaded it.

Or perhaps they went away to study and help the country, which is good. :)Education is important, we need educated laborors and engineers a lot.

That's not censorship. From wikipedia "Censorship is the control of speech and other forms of human expression, often (but not necessarily) by government intervention. The ostensible motive of censorship is often to stabilize or improve the society that the government would have control over."

You're not a traitor just because you don't support the police state, numbers.

Thats wikipedia for you. :p I thought that it was censorship because the Information Censorship Law (정보통신검열법 -1991 translated) states that one needs to put a social security number before they access the adult site.

You're not a traitor just because you don't support the police state, numbers.

However, you are a traitor if you evade your duties as a citizen.

EDIT: Oh, wait, its the 통신질서확립법 (Communications Order Law) that bans adult sites and censors sex scenes and drug usage scenes from movies.. The 정보통신검열법 is only in accordance with the national security law and censors communism-related materials.
