Melodic Metal

Does anyone know of some good bands that fit in this rather narrow genre?

To be a little more specific, I want something close to Sonata Arctica's style, if you've ever heard of them.

Not really anything like Sonata Arctica...I think he was looking for stuff that's more folk/fantasy-inspired. Iron Maiden is hardly that, despite their excellence.

no. I say that cause you live in Toronto, and on August 3rd Iron Maiden scheduled a date in Toronto at Molson Amphitheater (an Off-fest date).

I like sonata arctica 'cause they have a distinctive sound (don't know how to describe it better) and their songwriter is beyond excellent.

the melodic part comes in meaning that you can actually remember the melody to the song.

well, I've listened to a bit of gamma ray and vintresorg and they're a little more of the cleiche'ish metal that I was trying to avoid.

what do you mean by that?

and which albums?

What I mean by the generic metal sound is when the band uses virtually one chord for the entire album. At first listen, all the songs sound the same

what I'm looking for you can tell that it's way different, but still awesome on the first listen.

I definetly could tell the difference if I listened to it a lot, but that's not what I'm looking for.

Try Stratovarius for your melodic metal needs. They're a very technically gifted group of musicians that can produce some of the most inspiring and memorable songs, like "Father Time" off of 1996's Episode album. Running Wild also have some melodic pieces, though they tend to be more power metal-ish. Hope this helps!

try Kamelot. Their said to be power metal but Theyre very unique, no one sounds like them, i think it may be the type of music what your looking for. Plus their vocalist is amazing.

Have you tried Blind Guardian yet?? I find it hard to believe you would dislike them.

Have a listen to Dragonforce (UK) as well....I'm still not quite sure exactly what it is you're looking for, but the kind of person who likes Sonata Arctica generally also likes bands like these 2 (and the ones mentioned above, Kamelot are a good suggestion).
