Ever since I started playing HL2, I have experienced this problem either at the main screen or less than 30 seconds into the game.
But from reading possible fixes on this forum, I tried a few:
1. Reduce cpu speed
2. No virtual memory
3. Moved one of my two memory modules into a different slot
After doing this I played for about 5 mins - no problems! I exited the game as I needed to browse the web. But then my Geforce 5700 card failed! The pc won't reboot. So I got my old Geforce2
card out and used that. HL2 still worked fine and played for more than 2 hours! I'm actually surprised than the GF2 card performs pretty good - no slow down at 1280 X 1024 res with medium details.
Anyway, because I only played it a short time with the 5700 card before it died, I can't really say 100% that the 3 things I did help to solve the 'Memory cannot be read' problem or that maybe it was the card itself and that the GF2 would of solved it anyway.
I nearly gave up on this game after restarting so many times! But I'd say give it a try and see if it works for you.
