Memory Error Update

I had the memory error on starting a new game about 5 bars in on the loading screen and did that about 4 or 5 times to see if it would go any further. Same error every time.

I then tried it another time and got a different error, saying it was unable to open a certain gcf file. So I thought I would uninstall and reinstall the game to fix the gcf in question, (I can't remember which one it was) and try running the game again.

This time the Loading bar went close to the end but crashed again with the same memory error. So then I decided to install the 4.11 Catalysts, (had 4.10 previously) and try running the game. The Loading bar went to the end and I was in.....

The trouble is, the game only runs in a window at 640 res and Steam tells me that it failed to set the video mode and will be using safe ones every time I start the game. So as I decide I may have some fortune by actually being in the game now, I try and change to fullscreen and change the res above 640.

Error - the memory one crops up again and crashes the game. Whatever I do it won't let me run the game full screen, nor above 640x480 resolution.

Try re-installing and then if it still crashes, newer graphics drivers. Be nice to hear if anyone else gets the video problems I do though.

Running the game in a window at 800x600 resolution now. Still won't allow me to play in fullscreen, same crashes if I try and change it.

When loading new areas it doesn't crash, (so far) like a few people have reported.

Another update - played CS Source for a good while in fullscreen mode first time and no memory errors whatsoever. I'm convinced it's a problem with HL2.

Decided to completely uninstall my graphics card drivers. I ran the Cat Uninstall utility which removed the drivers and some other bits and bobs. Then ran Driver Cleaner 3 and Cab Cleaner in safe mode. This removed everything that I didn't need.

Installed all the drivers again fresh and can now run fullscreen, no memory errors as yet in CS Source and seems ok in HL2 for the moment. Might be worth trying.
