Menu screen for hl2

plain = efficient

I like it. No unnecessary animation for me please.

Apart for the background. I assume that the background is a camera view of an active (if menu-only) level. I don't want any animated fonts or bouncing windows or crap like that, but crows flying in the distance is more than fine. By the looks of that image, this menu will be very functional and aesthetic. (Thnks to Silent_night for digging out the vid, I was far too lazy :D)

Surely, I can't be the only one who liked the simple, yet plain, HL2 menu from the normal mapping mpg from awhile back?

Sure, it doesn't really fit HL2 at all, but I always liked it :)

That's the console, not the main menu.

[edit] heeeey wait it's not. I remember he opens a console window on top of it - so no you're right it is a menu screen.... possibly (blurry vid pic lol)

...tell that to the "New game, load game ... etc" menu selections

I win! :)

Yeah I replied before I looked at it - plus in the vid he opens a console dialog on top of it. That is an earlier menu indeed. Apologies.

the current menu screen is perfect IMHO. Different backgrounds couldn't hurt, but the text layout, fade effects, and typefaces are perfect. Simplistic and very good looking

anyone elese notice the lack of a "find servers" or similar mp function on the menu :p

so hush-hush arent we valve :p

Heh, HL2 is likely the only game where anyone actually gives a damn about the menu. :p

But I'd kill for one that has the G-man off to the right and, when run your cursor over the options, he says what they are.

What I love about the new menus is how they fade in and out. Specially the console window.

yeah i thought it was a nice touch as well :)

Personally, I HATE music at game menus. It's really really annoying in CZ, IMO.

omg, i cannot put into words how annoying the music in CZ is!!
i agree with u.. music at game menus is something i can live without.. plus if u think of it.. when u start adding stuff like music.. it only increases the load time.. pointless really.

i just hope they don't do anything too fancy for the HL2 game menus.. i don't like long load times.. and something too fancy would suggest increased load times.

and i'd feel sorry for the users with low end PC's loading HL2 with fancy game menus.. i think its generally something we can live without.

its whats in the game that really counts.

I really like the menus. Subtlety suits HL2 pretty well.

It really doesn't take that long to load a music file and start playing it - on the order of milliseconds, not seconds. Games take a while to start up because they have to load themselves into memory and set a whole lot data structures and variables up, rather than because they have fancy menus.

Completely silent menus suck, but ones that have -some- sounds in them are good, perhaps with quiet and subtle background music as well.

and i'd feel sorry for the users with low end PC's loading HL2 with fancy game menus
Well if they had problems loading the menu, they'd definately have problems playing the game. So this is a bit of a pointless arguement really.

what i meant by that is, its a given their load times would increase over users with higher-end PC's but it doesn't help the situation any with having too fancy a game menu..

after all, it is just a game menu.. leave it to the game itself to "wow" the users with the fancy stuff.

You're talking about maybe 5-10 seconds maximum every time they start the game. Big deal.

Just because of this thread I swear someone at Valve will see it and this menu thing will tack another week onto the origenal release date.

I bet the E32k4 was just one cheap'O backround so that they could keep MP secret. Like someone said a while ago.

I have no idea how to reply to that... All kinds of sheer madness. Oh good God.

I think the menu from the e3 thing looked pretty spiffy. I hope it stays, with a few nice subtle changes.
:monkee:

rather than _music_ in the hl2 menu.. I'd like some abience, it will probably add to the game if they did that. ..made it a little more creepy ..

edit: like the sound of city 17 .. omg so pr0
