Without this film, sci-fi cinema may have never gotten to the point where it is today. Metropolis is considered one of the most influential sci-fi movies ever made. I remember watching this when I was 11(ish)... Even though I was only a kid who had also just recently seen Jurassic Park and Stargate, Metropolis amazed me with its special effects. Granted, I watched the Giorgio Moroder version (partially colorized with a soundtrack featuring songs from Freddie Mercury and Adam Ant among others), but I still realized that I was watching some truly wonderful. Just take a look from this part of the movie that retells the story of "the tower of babel". (1:04 is really an epic shot/effect. especially for 1927).

Anyone else seen this film? I can't wait to see the newly restored version with 25+ minutes of "new" footage.

I enjoyed the anime of the same name, which had nothing to do with this movie.

Going to continue the march of the philistines and say I watched this the entire way through only by using the fast-forward on the VCR.

In my defence, some versions of the film just run plain slow, 'unreleased' footage or not (the film has a disputed framerate), and I was watching a mid-70s version with some kind of Kraftwerk-wannabe awfulness in the soundtrack.

Oh, here's some Kraftwerk, just because:

Also read the Tezuka manga and seen the anime that falls somewhere between both Lang's original and Tezuka 'reinterpretation' (he made up the manga having only seen a poster for Lang's film. There's some stuff about killer rats - Walt Diznius Mikki Mausus - that would probably make Lang spin in the grave he probably didn't even occupy at the time). Not a great fan of either, and it goes without saying that Lang's Metropolis is infinitely more interesting, if you have the time to sit down to it.

Though restorations of Metropolis happen at least twice every decade.

Anyone else wanting Peter Jackson to adapted a modern remake of this movie?

I've always meant to see Metropolis. I guess now would be a good time. Though that sounds ****ing long.

Despite my love for the film, it really is hard to watch all the way through. I think the only reason I can actually watch it is that the first version I saw had color and a 80's pop soundtrack:

I think I'm also a bit biased since I grew up watching a lot of silent film when I was young (The Great Train Robbery, City of Lights, The Kid, etc).

gonna be watching this as inspiration for my next uni project. hopefully it's out soon

I got a version that claimed to be the most complete (though it didn't have some of that "new" footage from the trailer there) version with what it said was a re-recording of the original score. I rather enjoyed it, even if the friends I watched it with thought it was boring as hell.

I won't be getting this new version on release but perhaps at some point.

Does not need remake. Just sit back and relax while watching it in. Soak in the visuals, keep a simple mind. It's a great movie. Restoration looks fantastic.

Not really, he sucks these days. Apparently his talent was hidden in his fat cells, and now it's gone.

Have you seen the lovely bones? I think he still got good film making skills, better than most these days.

I love this movie. It's a bit slow and difficult to stick through as people have already said but I think it's a worthwhile time investment. I have no idea which version I saw though. I just really like the imagery and atmosphere of it all.

This movie is wonderful. I own it, but the original un-restored version, and parts of it were really hard to see. The last restoration wasn't that great, so I'm really looking forward to this.

Meh, I think I'll just re-watch Jurrasic Park. Thanks for reminding me about it.

Yup.

I primed myself for a 1920s era borefest and was pleasantly surprised to find a good, simple story and an abundance of metaphors. No doubt it was boring at some points, but I enjoyed it and my love for it only grew after I read up on all it's subtleties later and reflected on them. It makes the story much more powerful and allegorical.

Gotta love Metropolis, one of my favourite films absolutely. Got an earlier restoration version on dvd.

When I watched it two of my friends were there too, half-watching it. I don't remember why, but the likelyhood of seeings tits in the film came up at one point. They were basically saying that it was made in the twenties and there's no way there's going to be nudditiy in it. I responded with "Yeah, but it's German." I was pleased with the Yoshiwara scene (even though False Maria's dancing isn't really that erotic, especially due to the mad framerate at that point).
