Hi, I tried searching for this but results didn't prove much helpful. Whenever I start a new game in Half-Life 2, it gives me a Runtime error, right after the loading screen is gone and the words Half-Life 2 appear on screen.

Microsoft Visual C++ Library Runtime

Runtime error!

"Abnormal program termination" or something like "This application has asked Runtime to end it in an unusual way".

But this seems to happen only at the beginning of the game. Also, Counter-Strike: Source works well. And I've tried to skip to a different chapter in Half-Life 2 and it also worked well, but still I'd like to fix this error fully. I hope you can help me, and if you can't, maybe you could give me a savegame where you are in the train, right after the intro.

And if you must know, I do not have a legit copy of Half-Life 2, these are very rare where I live. I DID search for it in different shops but everything I found was pirated. So, instead of giving money to the pirates, I downloaded the game off the Internet... But some owners of a legit Half-Life 2 copy also encounter this Runtime error. I tryed different versions of Half-Life 2 and I still had the error.

Please try to help me. ;)

Whoops... someones going to get some stick.

Oh btw, they have shops on the internet now. :|

Yeah, obviously you suck at searching.
Try Steam.

Does it use PayPal? If yes, it won't work in my country...

Which planet is your country?

It uses credit/debit cards. Do they have those in your country?

I live in Moldova, in Central Europe, it has credit cards, only they are not widely used, and I tried registerinig with PayPal but it didn't support my country. Does Steam use PayPal or something else?

It uses CREDIT/DEBIT CARDs it does not support Paypal.

Order it over Steam or from a Shop in Romania or something over the internet.

You can buy the game if you're in Moldova :). I know it can be a bit of a problem, but it's possible.

Yeah, and I will, but that won't fix my problem... Can you at least get me a quicksave file after the intro where you are in the train? I think I am only getting the error when the game wants to play the intro.

OK, thanks, I'll try something. ;)
if you're not using a legit copy of the HL2-thats the punishment...jokin is missing just a dll of your pc or because of the game.if you really want to play try on the another pc...who knows....maybe will work..

If you buy the game your problems will be fixed.

See, I already tried alot of Microsoft Visual C++ Library .dll's and it didn't work, but CS:S works, HL2:MP works, and everything else... So it's obviously just the intro that doesn't work, that's why I need a post-intro savegame file - to start the game when the intro ended.

If you buy a legit copy, that problem will be fixed. Moreover, even if you got a post-intro save file, you would have other problems later on. And there have been rather significant updates to HL2, while the pirated versions are the first version that has been released.

Just buy a real copy, you won't be having problems, and you won't regret that, either.

Guess I'll gather up some money, put it in a credit card, and buy the game through Steam.

I was at a good store today, people said that there are licenced copies of games there, but all I've found was pirated copies... Most of them even had crappy Russian translations. No offense to Russians, but I really don't like the Russian language.

Several years ago, I played some games that came from Russian localizers. The translations were unbelievably horrible. I am not a big fan of localizations generally, and prefer to have everything in its original language, but those Russian game translations were unbelievable. I hear they haven't improved since.

Here's a tip: if you have a friend with a credit card, you can get him to buy HL2 for you and pay him back in cash. From what I understand, not every card your local banks will issue you would be suitable for Steam or Internet purchases in general. It's pretty much the same situation over here - the "default" card you get from banks is alright for local shops and ATMs here or abroad, but will generally not work with Internet purchases.

Thanks, that's a good idea, I didn't think of that.

About those Russian localizations, there are some new companies that translate the games very very well, heh they even change the writings on some textures, but I also like everything in the original language. ;)

Can you still send me a savegame file where you are in the train in the first level? I'd like to see if the game crashes because of the intro cutscene.

Which companies specifically? 1C? That's pretty bad, AFAIK.

The game doesn't crash because of the intro. Technically, this crash is related, unless I'm very much mistaken, to the game attempting to call certain functions from its Steam interface, which is lacking in the pirated versions, as the pirated versions run (or try to) standalone, without Steam. I don't have HL2 available to me right now, but again, even if you got a save, you'd encounter many other problems. Two of the most notable would be very long delays after each loading, and enemies not moving or shooting. Also, you'll likely be unable to play beyond a certain point, as the scripted sequences don't run properly.

I believe that if you try to get the legal version, you should have it in a day or two :).

[Note to self: now that I'm actively convincing people to buy legal versions of games, I can see that I've had too much contact with the gaming industry :D]

At first, I was thinking of being hostile, like I am to all piraters, but you didn't really have a choice, so Good for you I guess, in a sense. But buy the game, you won't regret it. It's an amazing game.

So it is legal for shops to sell pirated software there? :|

Well, yes. It's the same over here, too. Heck, you can buy a bunch of pirated games at my local supermarket.

In reality, matters are a bit more complicated in many Eastern or Central European countries. The illegal games in question are usually imported from Russia, where there are companies who take games and re-release them, usually localized. In Russia, these games are technically legal, due to the relevant laws being very poorly developed. Hence, proving legally that these games are, in fact, not legal would be quite hard. And so they get sold openly in many European countries.

Another thing which I can say from personal experience, legal games are a novelty in some places. Some two years ago, it was very hard to buy legal (original) games here. The selection was very small, and you had to look pretty hard to find anyplace selling them at all. Even now, the situation is a bit poor. Buying new games is no longer a problem, buying old but famous games (Diablo, Half-Life, The Sims, etc.) isn't a problem either. But it's hard or impossible to find copies of less popular games - think Hearts of Iron 2, or Galactic Civilizations 2, such games.

Bottom line... like most other things, piracy is rarely a black-or-white issue. I'm not now going to start listing the various issues and takes on the situation, but it is indeed not always simple :).

Well I can get money for Half-Life 2 now, but I want the Valve Complete Pack *drools* and I don't have $80 right now, so I'll wait for my birthday when I should get enough money.

What's the Complete Pack? Is it what used to be called HL2 Gold Package back when it was released?

BTW, I saw a "Half-Life Platinum collection" here recently. Also a nice compilation of games - the original HL, both expansions, plus Team Fortress and CS if you enjoy multiplayer.

Ah, the Complete Pack is now basically just all the games they have. Interesting. I still have to buy and play Ep One myself.

If you have Steam, clicking on Purchase should work. Weird.

Have you tried clicking Purchase? I need to know if it's just me or if there are some problems with the site.

It's probably you. I don't have HL2 or Steam here, I've just upgraded my computer, and was having some issues, so I have a bare minimum of software installed right now.
