Yup.
In the first chapter, when you see Mossman on the screen in the artic.
You can noclip to her as it's a 'live feed'. She's in an unaccessable area of the map. Noclip there and you can see her and the artic outside, and I didn't stay there to see, but could someone see if a mini strider appears, becuase it does on the video, so presumably it's there. Maybe you can spawn it.

There were no mini-strider in the video that I'm aware of.

Those were new monsters, and I do believe they had three legs, but beside that they had very little resemblence to striders.

There is.
Right before the video cuts out.

There is a mini strider at the end of the video feed

Yes, there were new monsters. And if you missed them there, they are also seen again in the Episode 2 trailer, where you can hopefully fight them.

Well, if you look deeper into GCF you can find mini strider sound files and they are similar to striders so called "voice"

You don't understand the significance everyone.

If you see it in that vid, the commentery says it's all live, and it is I noclipped to it. I'm loading up episode 1 in 15minutes and I'll noclip and take pics.
They disapear after 5 secs though. The combine did atleast anyway.

But I must be able to spawn a mini strider, thats pretty cool right there, we don't need to wait for ep 2 to see them, play with them.

Gotta try that map with garrys mod, you know static camera is quite nice tool..

Edit: Shit,forgot.. garrys mod dont support episode one.. yet

"npc_create npc_ministrider" :) Attack anims aren't done, and the texture is plain

Code:
npc_create npc_ministrider

That'll create one for you, fully walking animated but with no attack animations or some of the stuff you see in the Ep2 trailer. It is also un-textured with just a basic colour all over as that is all the video shown needs.

EDIT: DAMN YOU JONDY! ONE MEASLY MINUTE WHICH I USED TO TYPE MORE INFO!!! GRR.

*ahem*

And most important - they are sooooo cute!!

One thing , how , from what we get in the game , we know Mossman is in the artic? I don't recall it was mentioned clearly.

The commentary states that it is the Arctic lab tileset or something similar.

They are a lot bigger than I thought D:

Apparently, because of missing coding they are made of stone. I spawned him at the beginning of Exit 17, so me, Barney, Alyx and about 4 rebels were blasting the shit out of him while he annihilated us with his "mini strider cannon".

Well I already knew the screen with Mossman was all real-time by looking at the commentary.

What I want to see is that sniper rifle. I hope sometime that they model the actual weapon and introduce into the game. Although they would probably have to make ammo extremely scarce.

Also remember when Alyx picked up the sniper rifle and when she spoke her voice sounded like it was going over a radio or a loud speaker sort of?

Are you creating it with "notarget" on? I created one and hid behind it. It repeated it's motion from the video. Then I turned notarget off and got its attention with a pistol to the rear, and it began chasing me around the trainyard, navigating around the obstacles, jumping around, and shooting me. Way fun!

Those things so are Combinified houndeyes. Look at the way they run. And their main body structure. And the fact that they're tripedal. Bet any money that mini-striders are what happen to houndeyes when this master alien race (whatever their real name is) get their hands on 'em.

Valve called these mini striders. Look under the sound files and that's what they are labeled as.

I go by the belief that the Mini Striders are just that: small versions of the Striders. Afterall, you can see a regular Strider in the background during the Episode 2 trailer scene with the running Mini Striders. More definate proof will be required to ascertain the truth of what the Mini-Strider/Houndeye relationship is if any.

I know they're called "mini-striders" but what you have to remember is that everything "Combine" that we've fought so far is just a forcibly-mechanised version of another race. "Combine" isn't the race, it's what that race do to conquered species. We've not actually seen the true face of the alien race responsible for all this (except for the brief moments we've seen that slug on the monitors and in Undue Alarm), we've only battled their Combine, i.e. their other, enhanced conquered races. The enslaved vorts in HL1, the enslaved and armoured humans in HL2.

Likewise, the striders, gunships, dropships, are all a Combine-ified part of an alien race that this master alien race enslaved and physically "tweaked" for their own purposes, before they got to Earth. That's what they do. They enslave races and then impose their own technology onto that race, to create a semi-biological, semi-mechanical army. I think mini-striders are what happen to houndeyes when this master alien race does its thing to them. If we're going to extend that theory, you could speculate if you wish that striders, possibly, were maybe originally another species from the same family as houndeyes, or "daddy"/"queen" houndeyes if you prefer. Who knows. But remember, the striders, the gunships, etc. - they're not aliens, at least not the aliens that started all this. They're just another defeated race of alien that have been "Combine'd" by this mysterious master-race and are now being used to manage Earth.

Have you spawned a ministrider in Episode 1? Because they're pretty big compared to houndeyes. Even if there were 'Mom and Dad' houndeyes I don't think they'd be that big. Then again who knows?

It was actually spawning the mini-strider that confirmed it in my mind. They're big in overal size, but its mainly the long leg-span that creates that impression. Their main body is more or less the same size. Look at the way they run. Go back to HL, watch how the houndeyes run in that, their precise animations for running, and then watch how these mini-striders run in Episode One when you spawn them. Look at the main body, its shape. The fact that both are tripedal and have a a large central eye.

It's just a theory at the moment, obviously, and there's no proof but if I were a betting man, I'd say that that's what they are.

Aye, but remember Gonarch in HL? That was just a fully-matured, "queen" headcrab. And the antlion queen in HL2? In the striders' case, it's only their legs that are big. The actual central portion of their "body" isn't actually that big (no bigger than, say, a bullsquid) if you look at it.

i'm going to Attempt to make a skin For the ministrider hopefully i'll finish before Ep 2 :E

the other day when I spawned one it was much bigger than I thought it'd be :p

No one's arguring that the Mini Striders are not assimilated creatures in the employ of the Universal Union. However you have to realize that the Universion Union has a large amount of creatures to choose from that exist in its dominion. Surely its holdings are big enough in that the Mini Striders could have originally been any dog-like creature found somewhere other than the Borderworld. As I said, more evidence is required for me to believe houndeyes are the original form of the Mini Striders.

That's fair enough. Like I said, it's just a theory and I wouldn't claim yet it to be anything more, nor would I even be in a position to - like you said, there's no solid evidence either way yet.

When you mentioned the Gonarch I was just thinking to myself how cool it would be if we met one of these in the wild.

The large size doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't houndeyes. The mechanical legs that the Combine gave them are just a lot larger than their original legs. The Houndeye has figured out how to run with bigger legs. I think that if these things are really Houndeye Synth, a good name for them would be Combeyes.

they acted like striders when you spawn them.....usually just stand in one spot and shoot...unless you hide...then they give chase...they run kinda weird right now, but what can you expect from a semi-complete npc

The mini-strider name and even their strider-esque attack are all probably just placeholders. They didn't want to call it a houndeye just yet, so they went with mini-strider simply because they have 3 legs. If they needed to specify an attack, why not go with the Strider cannon? Visually, they have nothing in common with Striders other than having 3 legs.

anyone care to upload screens of the mini-strider? for a grizzled old vet

some stuff from spawning them:

his gun has a predilection to crawl up to you in a cinematic fashion
by that I mean he'll shoot short of you, hitting the ground, then slowly move his aim up towards you (which looks cool)

I tried to crouch underneath him...I was temporarily stuck inside him

he won't shoot alyx unless you put her between you and him

It's worth noting the "claws" at the bottom of the feet look very similar to the spines on a Strider's legs.

I'm disinclined to believe the Houndeye theory.

I made this picture on release day, because i'm convinced ministriders are the codename for mechanised houndeyes. they run like them, they have one leg to the back, big striders have 3 going directly down, they must be...
