Miscellaneous

Had a job interview at the largest Workers Comp company in the country/world. Good position - solid pay and benefits. At first I met with the HR manager and I was rolling...shit was coming out of my mouth that I couldn't believe. I felt great and was sure I was going to get the job.

Then she tells me that she's going to bring in 3 additional managers to tell me about their departments. 3 managers at the same time? What in the ****? Then these three bitches walk in and sit down and stare at me with this cold gaze and I clam up completely. "What's your greatest weakness?" "What frustrates you at work?" What the **** does that mean? I couldn't form a single sentence properly. I was completely ****ed.

Now I'm 25, stuck in my parents house without a job, a useless degree, and my Asheron's Call account got recalled by the dude I bought it from. The only jobs I can get are at call centers, and not even that because I blow interviews. Think I'm going to apply to Sonic and then hang myself. So pissed at myself right now. Not sure if this is karma or if I'm just a pathetic waste. Probably both

That sucks. Don't give up on your career like that; just learn from your experiences at this interview. Those are the worst interview questions in the world, you just have to remember that you can't take the bait and remain as positive as possible when answering. Now that you know those questions are out there, prepare some standard answers and be ready for the next one.

Was in Vegas for a week, 3 days in I lost interest in gambling. As you get a good look around you notice a commonality amongst the faces of the gambling crowd. Everyone is either retirement age and has nothing else to do, or are devoid of any hope. At least half the people are smoking/drinking/both and don't even seem to care they're throwing shittons of money away. It's truly a sad scene and it didn't change from casino to casino. The only other type of people were tourists like myself and loudmouth dudebros playing a table game, most often roulette.

We didn't see every casino but tbh, once you've been to a couple, you've been to them all. Unless you want to see some other attractions like the Hoover Dam or Grand Canyon (the latter is a 5 hr drive), I don't think you need to spend more than 3 days in Vegas. If you do want to see all of the casinos, it might take a couple weeks, but I wouldn't recommend it. I don't know if I'll ever go back, I just don't care for gambling (yes, I got a net loss of like $35) but the odds are against you in everything. And since I'm not a smoker, a few minutes in any casino and my throat felt clogged like shit. So be prepared for 3x the phlegm.

The best part of the trip was seeing the Penn & Teller show on the last day. That was great.

As a so-cal resident with Vegas just a small roadtrip or frequent flyer reward away, I go somewhat regularly. I'm not a big gambler but my wife and I enjoy the nice hotels. Some of the new ones are pretty nice and we enjoy checking out the sights, but I agree with you on pretty much every point. Don't go for more than a 3-day weekend at a time, casino floors suck if you hate smoke, saw Penn and Teller finally after about 5 years of always seeing their billboard and being curious (they were awesome). We love to eat while we're there too. Do any of the good buffets?

Nah, just Cici's, which we have here too (it's alright). We were planning to go to some others there but we ended up getting hungry while near other places so...went there instead. My favorite restaurant was Lao Thai Kitchen, pretty good Yen Ta Fo.

Imagine how much water and waste they cart back and forth. Vegas is nowhere near a ****ing body of water, it's hilarious. That said, I'm glad ya'll are having fun. My mind just wanders.

There's Lake Mead (Hoover Dam) about 45 minutes away, I reckon they get both water and electricity there.

I'm going to Las Vegas for a few days on business in a few months. I'm going to try to talk my wife into a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon, but I don't think she'll have the onions. Otherwise, I'll be hitting a couple of the video game arcades and be touring a repair depot.

My computer just literally caught on fire. Blazed for a good 3 or 4 seconds after I noticed/ smelled the smoke.

This morning I woke up and turned on my computer and found that my video card was ****ed up. Low resolution, multicolored artifact over everything, black lines, all moving around based on what was on screen. So I was sad, but figured I wa probably still under warranty, and could just buy a new card locally, and sell the replacement I get from the warranty. So I bring home a nice new geforce 660, plug it in, everything is great. Start ripping the dark knight off my bluray disk and peruse the net.

About an hour later I smell electronics burning, that very distinct smell. I look to my left and HOLY **** SMOKE LIKE CRAZY. Computer still running like it doesn't give a ****, but I quickly shut it down through windows and as soon as I hit shutdown I hear a "ffffwhoosh" and suddenly fire is flickering through the grating of the side panel, and it lasts a few agonizing seconds as the computer powers off. I rip out the power cable from the surge protector, set my window fan to exhaust because my room is literally hazy with smoke, and I get out of the room so I'm not breathing it.

now that the smoke is cleared out, an initial survey shows two torched hard drives. No doubt the psu is the culprit, so that's ****ed too. Possibly more stuff too, but need to test. Will have to grab my other desktop from work and test things. I'll be ****in pissed if my new card got damaged.

not sure if this pic will work. Pic of my poor terabyte drive. https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=B7E289E3666AAC5E!2063&authkey=!AJjnZLpg83bRAXE&v=3

Which models/brands for all your parts? I'm curious which of them failed.

Holy shit. Good thing the fire didn't spread to anything else. That really sucks though. Did you have your data backed up?

Yeah, all my important stuff is on a couple externals.

pretty sure the Zalman 850watt psu is the one to blame. Definitely going back to Corsair now. My drives were a 1tb western digital, and another WD Velociraptor drive (their 15000 rpm drive). Mb is an msi board.

To finish off my surprisingly high spirit, this morning, while cleaning out an area to work on stuff, I accidentally knocked over a full cup of sprite that I forgot about in the excitement of last night. Got all over my mechanical keyboard, staining my desk, all over the hardwood floor and rug, and almost made it to my surge protector, before I stopped it.

Been a good 24 hours for me.

So, uhh. My band sort of did a QOTSA and released ridiculously brief teaser clips for our debut album.

Linkage

I'll also include the Full Track I linked ValveTime to last month that I wasn't supposed to, just in case you never strayed into the Music WIPs thread.

Got my linux computer from work. My new video card seems to be ok, thank jesus. The two other hard drives without burn marks are recognized and the smart status says there's no problems, though apparently I put windows into hibernate mode and not full shut down, because i can't access the data without deleting hibernation data. Im sure its fine though. These two drives had the more important stuff on them, the other two were just essentially a back up drive, and a temporary drive for my bluray rips and video conversion files.

Have a new Corsair 850w PSU on one-day shipping from Amazon, so I should be able to test the rest of my stuff tomorrow. Hopefully the MB and CPU are ok, otherwise it may be awhile before I can set up a new gaming computer.

What once was dead, now lives again!

Using the same wallpaper image on two different aspect ratio monitors?

I'd rather it stayed dead.

Also you have the same speakers as my brother.

The wallpaper reset because of the new video card.

Also you have the same speakers as my brother.
So what you're saying is, krynndoggy's your brother.

I expect any brother of yours to know better about aspect ratios before posting such images. For shame.

Its not like it matters, when centered it just cuts off the rest of the image, not like it scales it.

The girl's head looks like it's stretched in one of them, but I suppose that could be the camera angle.

Yellow stuff? You mean where the stain has been worn off showing the wood again?

Ooohhh, that's what it is. Man, that desk has seen some shit.

New doctor?

You mean Matt Smith, the guy who's played the Doctor for over three years now?

EDIT: Oh, that guy is going to be the new Doctor? Lame, ****ing spoilers that I had to look up to understand what you guys were talking about.

Band were asked to headline a gig for charity so obviously we obliged. Got a mention on the BBC Radio station local to the area it's happening in and also got the new album plugged, which was nice.

You can hear it here at 2:40:30 into the show, if you have the morbid curiosity.

Apparently we're absolutely fantastic.

* Updatezz *

So, since I posted this, we were played on BBC Sheffield again (different region to the link above, same region as the previous one I posted a while back) and I didn't realise because we were at a gig.

They played one of the tracks off the upcoming album so, frick it, here's the link. Listen from 27:50.

Computer is ****ed again.

**** everything. This is bullshit.
