Hi,
I'm not sure if anyone has posted this problem, it didn't come up in any searches. In HL2 at the next loading part right after
Alyx gets captured
the problem below comes up, followed by the 'memory could not be read' error. I tried validating the game files but that didn't work. I also tried the 'delete local content' button on Steam. I have a Radeon 9600xt, AMD Athlon 64 3000+ and a gigabyte of RAM.

edit: forgot the pic

Please help. I can't play any further in the game because of this.

I have the same problem, except it happens to me at the beginning of the game. "could not load model Gman_high.vvd" or something like that followed by the memory read error thing. Some Radeon users posted in the steam forums about fixing that up by uninstalling their video drivers and installing the old catalyst 4.12 drivers. I have not tried that myself... I'm a big fan of the game but I prefer not to downgrade the drivers, as this will probably downgrade the performance of other games that are actually working right now. Have tried every other "fix" out there except for that one. Half-life 2 ran flawlessly for me until recently, very strange that different people with very different hardware configurations are hit with these errors all of a sudden.

Thank you, that worked. Hopefully ATI will fix that in their next driver.

Hope so. Kind of a nasty fix, but I'm glad you are able to finish the game finally.

Finally broke down and tried it myself, Half life 2 runs flawlessly now... the new Catalyst drivers wouldn't even allow me to play. No more 'Memory could not be "read"' errors either... Sticking with this driver until a better one comes out.

holy crap i just posted a new thread about this and then i read and find that someone has the same gman error as i do. i just dl'd the ati 5.4 drivers, how do i "downgrade" to make it work, or is there anything else i can do, all my games run much better with newer drivers.

odd fact: i loaded a saved game in point insertion and it worked fine, it's the new game that gets it

oh yeah, i just tried the part in anticitizen one elfuhrer was refering to and got the same error

i really hope there is a way to fix this without getting old drivers, brothers in arms just doesn't run that well with the old ones

Hi there,

I've been having the same exact problem that has been described by Darkfallen. Whenever I try to start a new game, it loads about halfway then just closes with the error, "failed to load models/gman_high.vvd," followed by the "The Instruction at 0x####### referenced memory at 0x#######. The memory could not be 'read'" error. It does this every time, without failing.

I've tried many, many things to get it to work - reinstalled three times (both from the CD's and from Steam), installed the Catalyst 4.12 drivers, validated the game files, etc., all to no avail.

I need some help here!

Specs:
Shuttle XPC SK83G:
VIA K8M800 chipset
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
512MB PC3200 DDR
Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB
Western Digital 160GB HD

Thanks!

I'm having this same problem (with the Gman model at the beginning) since upgrading to the Athlon64 ...
