With games like Painkiller, Stalker and Killzone ( not including Doom3 really ) has Half-Life2's graphics and awe been outdated before its even come out?

At first we all used to say "wow, such amazing graphics" but with the incoming wave of next generation games it really doesn't stand out anymore.

but those games arent out yet either

but to answer I believe yes hl2 seems a tad less impressive after the wave of media from other new next gen fps's. the delay is hurting them.. its sad really because hl2 seems so amazeing yet so out of reach

i'd say yes. I remember first seeing the gameplay video and my jaw dropped. However, with their delay, lets face it, the shimmer is gone. I'm still going to buy it, but if they made sept 30th, it would've sold an immense amount of copies. Now it'll be released right alongside other games with just as powerful graphics. I'm sure it will still be successful, but sept 30th there were no other games of the same calibre about to come out.

I still haven't seen any game that can match the realism of expression shown in the facial animations for HL2 yet, so I don't think they are outdated.

Yes and no

Yes its not going to be a stand alone game among the dregs of others (would of been if out on sep 30th)

But no as it is still going own big time.

Ya HL2 will have graphics that will be amazing when they are released, but they just won't be able to compare with the other games you mentioned. Unless Valve's artists decide to use the delay time to create some higher poly models and textures.

Nah, HL2 still has the best balance of features of all these games. Besides after release Valve will release updates when new hardware/software becomes available, so it won't be out of date for quite some time.

I don't think it's "outdated," more so just not as new.
Asking if its outdated isn't the right question. Just because the features we've seen in HL2 will appear in other games doesn't make HL2 outdated.

How exactly is it outdated? HL2 will be the first game to fully utilize all DX9 features

Not if Far Cry hits its date (assuming, of course, that HL2 comes April 04)

i had a hard time reading your post b/c outdat0redness isn't 1337 enough. it should be "0u7|)470|23|)|/|3$$1!!!!!1!!!!1onehundredeleven!!1!"

so i voted no.

I still think the emotional reactions of the characters is years ahead of other games. And the physics is still awesome. I admit i tinkered with the alpha and the physics were incredibly impressive.

I'm kind of looking at HL2 like I did neverwinter nights. It'll be a really fun game and all, but the mods are what are really exciting to me.

The thing that always seemed impressive to me was just the style of the whole thing... that definitely hasn't been lost.

its still half-life (ish) which alone is godly so its like

sweet+ubersweet+sweet :) :D

Nice one D33, now games become outdated before they even hit the shelf. Ha.. And about Killzone, there is no way in hell it has better graphics than HL2. All screenshots I seen are blurry, this why it seems like those are great graphics. If you want to see great graphics for real, watch STALKER or Doom III videos. (I won’t say anything about Painkiller, because it looks like a joke compared to next generation FPS).

I've played KotOR and Arcanum for few days now, graphics sure don't make the game...

Ok, outdated was probably the wrong word to use and, I imagine, has effected the results of this poll quite strongly.

As for Painkiller, I kinda just dumped that in there because although it's not meant to stand up against the graphically detailed games, a lot of pro gamers are expecting it to take over and re-unite fast paced, fast action, fast aim, skilled gaming.

The game was godlike x1000 when i first read about it and looked at the screenshots back in July.. Now it's just godlike.

BTW, it's kinda funny in a Medal Of Honor Pacific Assault commercial movie where they show off how realistic the faces are.. Through the entire sequence I kept thinking "these guys just want to rip HL2's facial amazing system off and try to impress people with it" .. Or something like that..

Nevertheless, I like this game more than anything else ATM..

of course they do.........75% of FPS games after HL ripped it off in one way or another........

why not steal some of HL2's thunder before it even comes out?

Whenever it starts to seem worse than other soon-to-be-released games, I just look at the wonderful transparent light rays, 3d skyboxes, and reflections off of different surfaces in the DX9 example trailer.

HL was hardly original at the time (and HL2 doesn't seem to be any different in that respect)...

Half-Life was highly original, koopa. Unless you can show me at least a dozen games that handled their story and gameplay that way.

wrong, hl1 had ('nd still has) a great story...i think only max payne 1/2 has a story in the same level (i can't think of anything else atm)

Well, what I always think, is that screenshots and videos dont really compar to acually playing it. Thats just me, its like, the picture isnt right or something, and then when you paly it on your monitor, it looks so much better. I have noticed that with numerous games....And I really dont see how H-L 2 graphics are "outdated". They are no where NEAR old, and will probably last for many years....until H-L 3 hits the shelves  And for the above posts, I think H-L 1 was very original. If they had games at the time that could use its: Graphics, A.I., Scripted Sequences, and Story in that way, then I must have missed something...

I don’t think it’s outdated. The graphics are much more real than games like PainKiller, Doom III and Far Cry that uses bump-mapping all over the maps (I don’t know if PainKiller or Far Cry uses so much as Doom III) which just looks plastic in my humble opinion.

On the other hand, S.T.A.L.K.E.R must be the finest graphically game I've seen. The textures are extremely nice made, bump-mapping are nicely done and not like in Doom III etc., the skyboxes is just incredible nice, and so on.

Killzone almost looks as fantastic like Half-Life 2 do, except that I haven't really seen any high-resolution videos on Killzone yet, so I can't really compare them to yet.

Like some members already mentioned, Half-Life 2 must be the game that uses the nicest facially system I've seen. Can't really describe how I felt when I saw G-Man the first time... well, I wet my pants I can tell ya! ;)

Well, even if the graphics looks outdated or not, I don’t really care, because graphics isn't all in a game. :)
For now, I can’t wait to play Half-Life 2!!!

OMG OMG LOLZ. My cousins husband works at Dreamcatcher games, the company making Painkiller, its just entering beta testing now. I was going to help test it, but im not 18 :-(

Hmm... yes and no. Tough to explain it actually.

it hasn'et YET. but the more they delay, the more it will be outdated

I don't see much technology that's dated but I do see lots of placeholder material in the released media (texuters, models, AI). I wasn't going to judge those until the game comes out and I hope that the leap to the finished material will be as big as from early Alyx (in gray turtleneck + green jacket) to current Alyx (gray sweater + jacket).
And Source will also be continually updated in the future- I think the addition of image-based rendering was mentioned.

To me the one thing that does look dated are the shadows. We don't know much about them and have bits of conflicting information but what we have seen isn't very impressive.

.. But it seems I'm only talking about graphics here.

Anyone who thinks HL2 has the best facial animations hasnt yet seen MOH: PA videos. Incredible.

I'm sure that Valve will take the time it has from the delay to give Half Life 2 a bit of a face lift, not that it really needs one.

Yeah, dude i saw that. Great animations but i think HL2 is better. Although to be honest i love the Lithtech engine (NOLF 2, TRON, i think its called the Lithtech engine...) when it comes to facial animation.

Besides the whole pupil dilating thing would only ever be useful for cutscenes.

I reckon graphics are over-rated. I can't remember Half Life being praised for its graphics. Deus Ex wasn't either. Graphics don't make a game. But they sure make it look pretty :D

I started looking through all the MOH: PA stuff expecting somewhat of a.... next generation looking game. When I got to looking at the facial animation part it reminded me of sesame street- which one of these things do not belong? It was very impressive (check it out ).
I thought that maybe with HL2 I could tell what emotion they were expressing more readily(gman), but I did figure it out (sadness, depression then sleepiness). I also felt that HL2's models and textures were more natural (MOH: PA guy had a kind of 'CG' look- when asked about the Final Fantasy 'CG' look, Valve said it was the way the forehead was modelled but there was no forehead here..).
Looks really good and it's nice to see that games are getting into this 'emotional impact' thing.

I wasn't too impressed by MoH's facial animations. That the animation has more bones says nothing really, what matters is how the bones are used, how they are controlled. The animations didn't have real emotion to it, it's hard to see what emotion the guy was expressing, this was much more visibile in the G-Man video. How is MoH's speech part btw? If that's not really present it's great that a soldier can display pain when hit with his face, but if it can't talk as good as HL2 characters it's totally useless. because the real power of those facial animations is in conversations.
It looked rather cartoony, but without the exeggerated emotion of cartoon characters...

Tell him 'good job' from everyone at ESReality :)

I dont really care about the game... sure it will be a great game and all... but i want the damn SDK so i can mod it!

Whoa, those MOH: PA movies were pretty impressive. I thought the facial animations weren't that good, like someone else said, it was sort of cartoony and not very life-like. And the eyes felt like they were made of glass or something. But the other stuff was amazing, I actually felt bad to watch all those people get gunned down. And the aerial fight part, incredible. Games are really becoming more and more realistic, I mean the water and all, seemed better than in HL2 (although the resolution pretty poor). Those flicks made me really want to see some new HL2 material... so how about it, Gabe?

What, no? Really? Damn, didn't see that one coming.

It is possible that Valve could add support for dynamic, animated displacement maps (or at least normal maps). It would be sort of like animated sprays in HL except it would affect the displacement of the surface instead of the texture.

... and you could use it for more than just water ripples. Big bombs could make craters and even have shockwaves rippling through the ground. There could be a level like in that horror movie where you can see the dead people's faces stretching the wallpaper and trying to break through.

I doubt they will... but wouldn't it be cool?

They could, most likely, release the SDK today with no negative effects to Valve, HL2, or Steam.

Who knows why they don't.
