I'm looking for a good mmorpg game now that I have cash to spend irrationnaly and i was hoping maybe you guys could help compile a list of the most played MMORPGs out there. Obviously I've heard of EQ and SWG but elves&dwarves and jedis are not my thing really, I'm looking for something like Anarchy Online, I really liked that one but i don't have the patience to start over.

EverQuest, StarWars Galaxies, Savage, Planetside, Dark Age of Camelot, Final Fantasy XI, WoW (WoW's not out yet, but it looks like it'll be a very good MMORPG), uhhhmm.. I'm sure there are others, but, that's all I can think of.

I'd suggest FFXI, I was in the beta, and I can vouch for the fun factor. Lotta fun. Also, they're going to add PVP to it soon, something I wish was in the beta.. :)

planetside is a MMOFPS, and I don't really like the Tribes 2 style gameplay but I appreciate the suggestion : )

I have bought Savage last month, it's really great but I want something with more content and less brawn. I love the Rabid/Pred combo hehe.

World of Warcraft looks nice, but I'm really tired of the whole elves and dwarves thing, fantasy RPGs bore me to death.

I went and searched for info on Matrix Online, here is what I found:

"The Matrix Online

The Matrix Online has been announced for release sometime in 2004. Published through the combined efforts of Warner Brothers, Ubi-Soft, and Monolith Productions, The Matrix plans to introduce the use of "Bullet Time slow interactive game play" in conjunction with it's "dozens of weapons and martial arts manuevers".

I'll sign up for the beta, who knows I might get lucky :D

But I've been reading a few reviews of SWG, and it's starting to sound interesting: at first I thought you'd have the entire cast of SW stunt doubles, meaning Han solo wannabees left and right but apparently it's not like that all. Every reviewer said that if you're willing to put up with the bugs (mainly broken down quests, class balance issues, item customization, etc...) it's really a great game :)

10€ a month isn't that much after all I spend nearly 200€ a month on smokes hah!

By the way register here (Mailing list) to get a chance to sign up for Matrix Online Beta http://thematrixonline.warnerbros.com/web/signup.jsp ;)

I have SWG and to me the game is dying. By that I mean the population is really low compared to when the game came out. I enjoyed it for about a month then it just got boring because there isn't much to it. It looked pretty cool to me at first but like I said before after a month its just not fun anymore.

There are some other MMORPGs I know about I'll post em in a minute.

Really? how many players are there in total? how many servers? this is important because if I want to play a MMORPG i really want it to be MMO : /

I'm telling you, Para, take a look at FFXI. It's a great MMORPG, and if I had to play either that or EQ/anything else, I'd go with it.

And, WoW isn't just going to be elves and dwarves. They'll have undead, and, taurens, and uhh.. orcs.. lol, well yeah, I guess you just have to be a fan of the series? :)

Yes get FFXI theres tons of nice people on the servers, plus you are playing with jap players as well as american. Its a ton of fun, more so than any other MMO game ive played.

I dont like mmorpgs. They cost too much money for me and I suck at them :(

same.. as in the financial part... can't afford em.. tho i wish i could.. just for a bit to see what all the fuss is about..

if i could try any it would obviously be the FF one since i have been a long time fan of the series.. :)

Para, SWG is probably one of the best games I have ever played. They just added player mounts, player cities, and are working on vehicles yesterday. There are only like 3 jedi at the moment so don't worry bout that. There are also plenty of people playing, you just need to go to the good planets like Corellia or tat...

Ok, I think I'm gonna go for SWG.

Shuzer I tried finding info on FFXI but I couldn't find anything not even screenshots : /

Edit: Posey they just unlocked the Jedi class recently, and the background setting of the game is when there are only three jedis in the movie: Obi Wan, Yoda and Darth Vader

they've been working on vehicles for SWG since day 1...it's not a good game, imo.

i was on the beta and it was just a terrible game. i didn't even run into many bugs when i played (other than getting booted off the server once in awhile)

until they add vehicles, you have to run rediculously far to get places...and god...i just have the biggest list of complaints and stupid things i hate about the game.

i don't have time to be uber specific, but just know my vote is thumbs way way way down.

you couldn't find any info on final fantasy XI?

the jedi class was never locked...you just have to play for 3 months of like 10-20 hour a week madness to unlock it.

and then you just unlock a force-sensitive character slot where you can make a new character (after 3 months or more!!) and maybe become a jedi with that char.

then don't forget that if your jedi character dies, it's permanent. i'm just not that hardcore. but i dunno...SWG is for totally hardcore people with lots of time...it's not something you can play casually at all.

Ooops sorry for giving out false info.

But that doesn't matter to me I don't want to play Jedis, I'd rather hunt them down : )

Thx Mchammer, why didn't I think of Gamespy lol :D

Anyway I'm off to the shops to find SWG, apparently it just came out TODAY in france what a lucky coincidence, looks like it's fate :)

Ok I can't leave just yet, there are a few construction workers at my windows taking the shutters apart and I don't feel like leaving my apt unsupervised with these guys around...

So I popped back in here : ) MC if it's a ripoff I'll let you know, but I think I'll like it: I mean AO was really fun and this has a lot more to offer.

There's not a lot of info known about the Matrix Online, but i found a little trailer showing off some of the combat and bullettime.

I'm perhaps the last person on this planet to have found it, but here goes anyways:

http://www.gametrailers.com/vault-m.html

Scroll down a bit.

i really hope you hate it....nothing personal, but i hope SWG fails. The devs for the game are obviously talented, but they did some things with the beta and the release that i just can't support with money.

mainly, they released the game in a shoddy, unfinished state (even for a MMORPG). they still haven't added vehicles (what, 8 months later?), and they also hyped up the movie-ish encounters that might happen.

all the previews and reviews have screenshots of things that just don't actually happen in the game unless you play it for 40 hrs a week.

I feel your pain Maski, when I was playing AO (a title which fits the game perfectly with the amounts of bugs causing anarchy online) I lost a lot of time going back and forth between lost xp due to glitches.

Anyway, I just bitch-slapped my wallet at the store... 60 euros for this, it better be good since I can't get any refund. I'm going to install it right now : )

SWG has a monthly subscription fee, doesnt it? I would never play a game that has that... Even if it is a MMORPG. Singleplayer RPGs such as BGII, Morrowind, GothicII, Kotor, etc etc gives me 90% of my RPGing needs (nude patches gives 95% ;)). I would play a MMORPG if it was one time cost. Hell, I would even consider buying larger expansion packs every half year or so (at a reasonable cost of course), as long as it was a choice (in SWG case, people with the original could only travel to planet ABC but people with expansion to planet DEF too, or something) and all the fixing stuff and minor features where in regular patches. Subscriptions are far to expensive for me. With expansions (maybe $30) you at least have a choice. According to a site I found, its 144$ if you buy a year, and $180 buying monthly in a year. Then comes the cost of the game itself. Pff, no game is worth that.

this is what needs to happen to increase the popularity of MMORPGs.

i understand that they need to pay for server and further development costs, but c'mon...it's really really expensive for the average gamer.

it's rediculous to ask someone to spend $50-60 for a game and then restrict them to only being able to play for a month before they have to fork over another $12 or whatever.

this problem is compounded by the fact that some of these games only become really really fun after you've been playing for multiple months. SWG is a great example of this.

Strippers, w00t! :)
Though I prefer elf ladies with breast in so tight clothes they nearly explode, and lots of dirty orcs. Sadly, I assume WoW will be subscription too... Oh well, back to Gothic II. Not many loosely dressed ladies, but you CAN have sex in that game :naughty:

Of course, any and ALL MMO's will have monthly fees... if they didnt, you wouldnt get server maintanance, and they would eventually just end up corrupt, and would fail all the time.

Think rationaly... how much money do you spend on movies? Either going to the theatre or renting?! I mean seriously, I can speak for myself when I say, I spend way more than $12 lousy bucks a month!

And how about cigs for people who smoke, or alcohol for people who drink? I can GUARENTEE you that they spend MUCH more than $12 a month on their "entertainment".

$12 a month is NOTHING!!!! The only thing that is bad about MMO's is that they are crazily time consuming, but thats a down side you just have to deal with.

Neocron was good, got fed up of that though. i dabbled with Planetside, but it fizzled out after the first two months (and sony are still ****ing billing it for me, ****ing money grabbing ****ing pig felching little wankers). i've been tempted to try SWG, or wait for The Matrix Online. if you're a beardy weirdy type of RPG player then you can wait for Everquest 2.

any other good MMORPG's on the horizon?

For once we agree Maskirovka  . I was also in the SWG beta and I honestly couldn't believe that they shipped it in the state that it was in.

true, but alcohol and cigarettes are proven forms of entertainment for the people that like/use them, and it's not like there's an initial fee for them either.

MMO games have the initial fee of $50-60, and then a monthly fee that's something like 20% of that.

you say $12 a month is nothing, but when it's on top of your normal entertainment (the things you mentioned) it seems like a lot...especially if you ultimately end up thinking the game sucks.

my other point was that for most of these games, one month isn't enough time to really feel out all the features and see what new features make it in out of the usually gigantic list of stuff that was "promised" but never made it into the retail version.

the best examples of this are WW2OL and SWG.

I'll second that suggestion. Highly entertaining and distinctly different from the rest of the MMPORPG market.

How much does it cost to maintain the SWG servers? I'm actually curious, I have never really thought about it, and I'm not into that. If it cost millions a year, then yes they might need the subscription fee... Does it cost that?

agree @ planetside...i was in the closed beta for that and also kept playing up until they were charging money...then i played it a bit at a LAN center to see if it was worth it...it wasn't.

i'm excited to see Matrix Online...if anyone can create a great immersive environment it's the wachowski bros...and they're working with the project directly.

i just hope the gameplay is fun and the game has lots of features for the casual player as well as the hardcore player.

i'm the type of person that's usually casual with games unless they're really fun, and then i'm incredibly hardcore with those certain games that deserve my attention and time.

Their server costs are probably no higher than any other MMPORPG, however they do have to pay Fatboy George Lucas for the licence, so his cut of the cake bumps up the price. The fact that Sony know every johnny highstreet over 12 will probably buy a copy because it's 'SW' probably encourages them to push the price a bit also (not that I'm cynical at all:dozey:).

As I understand it the combat is all scripted, which pretty much means it will suck big time.

Wow, you obviously didn't play. Shuttles take you everywhere you need to go, so there is basically no running to other cities... They also released mounts yesterday, so now you can buy on of those.

Yes, it is several million, they have about 20 servers. The game world is also larger then any other mmorpg. The space expansion that is coming out in 2004 will also have TWITCH FIGHTING!!!! That's so cool, I can not wait!

wow, you obviously didn't read my post AGAIN. i said i was part of the beta...and i played it quite a bit.

you have to wait several minutes just to get on a shuttle...and they cost money...lame.

and they JUST released mounts...how many months has SWG been out for? and who knows when the hell the space expansion will be out? 2004 might mean december 2004.

and in the space expansion do you have to make a new character and build them up and earn money and spend time to build them up in order to fly spaceships? if it's anything like that, i have no interest whatsoever.

if your space expansion character is separate and only deals with the space aspects of star wars, then i have a small interest, but still lots of skepticism.
