Mod idea " random"

Ok , well the mod im thinking of , would have to change alot of hl2 content. ALOT. Which therefore might not work thats why i put "random" into the tital.

ok well after the yu-gi-oh series came out " i kno i kno what a kiddies show . personally im only 13 soooo its ok to me ".
I was thinking on the lines of this.

There should be maps , forest , desert etc. If you dont know insect monsters are better in forest etc. A person would need to know abit about it to go ahead with it.
Anyway as i was saying a server maxing it out.
You join a server with people , you cant attack then.
You have to go up to them and ask to duel "some kind of duel button . or invite"
Then if they accept they should be teleported to an arena where they can battle, "maybe sent to a different server to reduce lagg on other players in the server" once there they should do the battle theme like on the show. If win , they should get points plus a card from the other players deck or unlock a card. Like i said this will be a big mod cause im sure there is over 200 monsters.

features : Ummm , Custimizing charater.
making a card deck.



Anyway that was just an idea i want to get out.
So i wont go on about cause im sure most people wont know it or dont like it.

That sounds like a LOT of content (meaning a HUGE download and super-lag for pretty much everyone playing) for a not very revolutionary idea.

It would take a really long time to create 200 monsters (if they all have different models) and it would be horrible for the server which would have to call up 2 monster from a collection of 200 every time a battle took place. I could only see this working in 2D if you want the visuals to be impressive enough and the gameplay to be smooth enough to attract any players.
 
Not for the source engine.

Remember, source is a shooter engine. It wasn't designed with large lobbies in mind.
 
Who in their right mind would make more than one server to play a mod like this? It would work, if the game was an MMORPG..
 
Dumb idea. Go play Pokemon Stadium if you want something like this. Or if you are more mature, one of the Magic games.
Source isn't build for this. ESPECIALLY not online. And I don't think you'd have much of a fan base either. I'm not trying to generalise, but most people who play HL2 aren't that young to enjoy an idea like this.
 
Source could do it, but it'd take a dedicated team who knew what they were doing, and who had skills beyond "Ideas man"

I think it could work.

It could support more players because not a lot would be happening. There is no advanced collision detection. The player only needs basic movement, there are no bullets, physics or any heavy bandwidth/intensive calculations.

Mosters use attack animations but dont need collision they just execute an attack animation and the opposing moster just plays a hit/death animation.

The mod would need good coders and a lot of modelers/skinners/animators, but I don't think it is impossible.

Those are some very valid points (coding's not my strong point).

There are still two other points to be made (perhaps more):

- Why use the Source engine if you're not going to be taking advantage of the physics system? (if not only for playerbase)

- Would you be able to get a team together to concept and create 200 models and their animations?
 
NOOOOOOOOOOO all of Valve's stuff should remain FPS..... NEVER MMORPG
