Mod Suggestion - Scrap Heap Challenge

Hey everyone,

This was just an idea me and some friends thought of, what if we combined some aspects of Gary’s mod such as the constraint crossbow and physics gun, then gave the players an arena like the crappy image thing below:

Where it is grey they’ll be a gate which after say 20 minutes will rise and weapons will spawn on each side. Blue team will be given the time limit to create a fort of some kind to defend against the opposing team. The Red team will have to use everything around them like the first team to create vehicles that they can assault them with (of course they can also attack on foot if they choose) other maps would include objectives such as try to reach a button by using anything they can find while trying to kill each other .ect. The cycle of attack and defend will change each round.

The main aspects of this mod would be teamplay and funplay. just seeing what you can create in the certain time limit.

There are two main things that i am unsure about in this mini mod. One is on the first map (that will be to one displayed above) if the fort should have an shell of some sort made of metal columns to help the players begin?? and if yes then should metal plates (or such like to be used for walls) be attracted to certain areas to make building easier??

there's a tv show by the same name, where the teams have to build contraptions like cars, boats, slingers etc. you wouldn't really need to make a mod, could just use garry's mod and make a map with some triggers.
 
Would that show be junkyard wars?

I'd like to see a mod like that come out. Sounds fun to me.
 
yeah it is based upon the show and all we would need was the map and maybe a little bit of coding but what about the ideas im unsure of?
 
Needs to becareful with lag, tho. Too many physic objects might screw things up. :p
 
Garrysmod is very slow online, you would need a "light" version of garrysmod that just has the physics gun that cna freeze and move stuff. maybe somehow you could get working pieces of cars sitting around the mpa, like a motor, and whe it is binded to an object it will spin wheels attached to that object.
 
someone needs to refine the multiplayer code, and perhaps add animated player models :p, so it all looked and felt nice. but i can see it happening,

like, 'teams your target is to build a rocket platform that can support your entire team, the winner will be the one who manages to launch successfully with all team members onboard and reach the greatest height'

that would just kick ass. :D virtual scrap heap challenge , lol
 
well i agree it would kick ass so we're getting a beta map ready but the only problems we would have are the animating/modeling and coding because we all dont know any. Anyone wanna help?
 
I agree, it'd be a ton of fun. I'd love a mod like this. As for your questions, I'd say give them a metal shell, but forego the attraction because it would be difficult to implement and would probably increase lag quite a bit.

I was thinking about making a mod similar to this (when I have free time, which will be this summer), except that teams would work independently (no killing) and have some problem they need to solve, such as getting the jeep across a chasm, or getting all the players on top of a platform using only certain things. Every building material would have a cost, so you'd have to be creative and judicious. Perhaps players could go to some resource field and compete to gather resources there.

Of course, item 1 would be to re-implement Garry's modifications, which probably isn't trivial to do. But it's amazing how many millions of player-minutes have been created by his simple work... I see enormous game play potential for mods based on those ideas.
 
What would we need to keep from Garry's mod?
As far as I can tell, you'd need the move/freeze thing and the welding tool. Depending on the challenge, ropes might not be necessary. The camera stuff, item spawner (rocket launcher) and balloons and all that... not really needed either.

As for physics objects, yeah it could be problematic. The first (obvious) thing to do is to divide the map in half (as suggested) but have the dividing door a func_areaportal, so that each team is only rendering their physics objects for the majority of the round. Then, once they're done building and manipulating them, the areaportal is set to open. I'm not sure how much that would really help though. I think it would definitely be necessary to minimize everything else as much as possible so that we could retain the accuracy of using actual physics objects, not overridden or multiplayer stuff.

To extend it further, you could have to fight the other team initially for core parts, things like wheels, blades, mounted weapons, etc for your fort and vehicles. Sort of like CTF in a way where you'd have to use some teamwork to try and grab the good stuff, and once you get it back through your gate (think Combine barriers that your team can pass through but not the other team), it's yours to use to build your fort or vehicle.

This mode could be timed so that it's only maybe 5 minutes long, so that you'd spend the remaining time that your gate is closed actually building your defense and offense.
 
Perhaps also limit the amount of parts that can be gathered or made (spawned), if that route is taken. You could do this to add a bit of a challange, sort of as an alternative to the price idea, and too keep the lag down.
 
All good ideas guys but as i said i dont know modeling, coding or animating so if we want this to become a reality then i need some help!
 
How about a map/gamemode where team A has to modity a car and add more weels and then build a good defence for a VIP.
The car has to get to a certain point without the VIP being killed...
But if you modify garrysmod, you would have to do so that when one player uses the unfreeze button all of the freezed objects won't fall down... only that persons freezed objects...
 
Yeah that would be a good idea but 2 problems...

1. I realised i can no longer map for hammer :p
2. I dun think i have the time atm, so anyone wishing to create this go ahead :)
