IMPORTANT TITLE THAT PROMISES GREAT THINGS OF MY IDEAS IF ONLY YOU WILL LET ME JOIN YOUR TEAM AND TAKE OVER AND BECOME SUPREME DICTATOR
but of course i'd never do that...
Continuing in the tradition of Watership Down, Brian Jacques...
Oh, sorry, wrong series.
I was thinking of ways to implement a Mage type system, where the character's perception defines and controls his world. If you don't know what I'm talking about, it's kind of hard to explain.
Mages come about through Awakening, when s/he is able to impose their reality on the rest of the world. Their beliefs of what is possible in the world distort, at least in our perception, but since they've Awakened, they their beliefs come true. For example, if I believe that I can throw fireballs, I can. Of course, I really can. Naturally. What do you mean, I can't do it? I'll show you! Haha! Burn!
Your beliefs also change the way you see things. So, if your system of beliefs said that you could control the rest of the world because you can see and manipulate gravity, you might see everything as a different gravitational resistance. The buildings around you are resisting gravity. This might let you see through walls, as the people inside are resisting gravity, and your sight of gravity is not blocked by walls, as light would be.
But how would this completely fluid system port to a game?
Well, my idea is that anything that is perceived has a category, and the higher your "perception" in a category is, the more powerful and vaired your skills, attributes, or attributes of skills. So, as a chart, it might go like this -
perception:
Physical - touch, taste, hearing, smell, sight
Mental - Psychic, foresight, telekinesis
Bias - Fire, Metal, Magnetic, Gravitational, Earth, Air, Water, etc. on and on...
The Bias would provide the style, the physical and mental perception would provide the type. Powers would be based around these in combinations. Fire + telekinesis = pyrokinetics, and higher your bias or telekinetic ability, the more powerful the attack.
Strength, intelligence, Dexterity, Wisdom, Charisma
Perception stats would be based on a series of questions, or just choices. Attributes would be determined by the player, with a set number of spheres, 1 sphere being the lowest, and 5 spheres the highest. In the beginning of character creation, there is one sphere in every stat, and ten that the player can spend where they wish.
Oh, and if you do know about Mage, what do you think of either taking out Paradox altogether, or making the players Marauders?
I'm probably going to need to bump this until someone with working knowledge of Mage comes along. In fact, if anyone knows anyone who knows anything about Mage, I'd be much obliged if you would show them this so's I can get feedback.
Thanks for reading an Unreasonably Large Post. (TM)
