Mod your ATI X800 Pro to a X800XT in no time!

Call me a wuss, but I'd rather spend the little extra rather than risking screwing a brand new card up. Plus from reading on, it seems to be a half-and-half success rate.

It's just not worth the risk and loss of warranty. Buy an XT if you want an XT.

yea...it's not as simple or safe-ish as it is to do a bios mod...and it's not like you're saving THAT much money...they get so excited....as if you're getting an x800xt out of a 9800p :\

still interesting though :p

Exactly.

Ahhh the days are back of hardware modding. No more soft mods.

Its just a challenge for them. They aren't doing it to save a buck.
Many know how and which L1,L2,L3 bridges to modify on CPUs and modify them to unlock multiplier sets among other things.

People who can afford to break an X800 can afford to buy the XT version, I'd imagine.

Not always true, thats about $500+ with tax and everything, I got my X800 Pro for $434 with tax and everything, not too expensive :)

399.99 @ Compusa :p
I could get a Sapphire version too. But that's through Corporate.

You're forgetting the non-XT version has cheaper + slower RAM modules on board

True but it OCs very well.
Its Samsung 2ns which is rated for 500MHz. The Pro is actually clocked at 450MHz which allows for good headroom. People have OCed it beyond 500MHz and with extra cooling I'm sure you could go a little further.
The XT I think uses 1.6ns which runs at 500MHz.
Platinum is higher clocked.

But if you know how to overclock, why get a pro and overclock to XT, when you can get XT and overclock to Uber-XT?

You can mod a car to go as fast as a ferrari, but at the end of the day ur car ain't a ferrari. Same deal?

Because the XT can't OC as well at all.

for this example you are right, the card is maxed out. but in other cases, ram timings, cpu and probably more video cards not maxxed out, his argument stands, thats what ive been saying all this time.

in this case, we have an extreme example, something out of the general case. but it dont matter, people buy your ****ing cards, but make shure they run hl2 1600x1200 full settings with vsync on flawleslly = no video lagg.

Wow, I'm sure Asus is touched you agree with him. :rolling: :upstare:

Anyway, Majestic XII - nice find :).

Thats impressive, but not something I'll be doing in the near future. I have enough heat problems as it is...don't need my GPU melting on me.

That does work, people just aren't doing it correctly, they aren't scraping away enough. I'd probably do that, If I had the money/need to buy an x800.

Why would you spend $400 on a graphics card and then overclock it? Makes no sense to me.

A direct quote from THG regarding the 4 'disabled' pixel pipelines of the X800Pro: -

"The modder community will be disappointed to hear that these "sleeping" pipes can no longer be reactivated through software or by flashing different BIOS, as was the case with previous cards."

Just buy an XT, you know it makes sense.

They have been doing hardware modifications with traces for a long time (especially CPUs). Many mod have modded their AXP to work in dual boards back in the day.
Just recently was it that you could just update the bios. Now they are just back to the old ways.

Yes, buying an XT makes sense for just about every single person on this board. Unless you dare to try it out. lol

I assume once yields improve that the chances of a succesful mod will vastly improve.

id suggest you delete that link. the people who have tried it have permenantly disabled those 4 pipes and voided their warranties.

quote from a x800pro owner.
i've just found that the original method that we were introduced to is WRONG. DO NOT SCRATCH THE CARD AT ALL. i've found that the points we were scratching off IS the actual contact points and that there is no 'coating' as we were mislead to believe.

i grabbed my trichome microscope, 30x, and looked at the 'dull' points, and they are in fact copper. which leads me to believe that the mod didn't work for so many because, we scratched off the contact points.

Mods and Posters please remove the links to the ocUK 'guides', we should look into this to see if we were intentionally mislead. it just sucks that all the ones that tried the mod have permanently disabled those 4 pipes.

X800 Board variation memory modules theoretical speed limit (MHz)

X800 Pro: 500mhz samsung 2ns latency (K4J55323QF-GC20)
X800 XT: 600mhz samsung 1.6ns latency (K4J55323QF-GC16)

Please note that these are not the modules retail clock speeds, but the maximum that can be achieved whilst keeping the low latency timings of the chips.

You will never softmod or hardmod an X800 Pro to an X800XT without physically removing the memory chips and soldering on some XT chips.

To save 100-200$?
And then end up wrecking your card and having to spend $400 on another one, if you that much money to risk you should have enough to spend the extra $100.
