So what are the possibilities of a group buying the engine liscense and findind a publisher to distribute they're original game?

I am curious how much the average engine costs :) and if this is possible for a mod team.

Unreal $?
Source$?
Havok$?

I don't have an exact figure but it's in the region of $100 000. (usually)

someones better off starting with a mod for hl2, and then getting valves support if it takes off

Buying the engine gives you a lot more freedom to do what u want (According to Valve u can do anything :) ) but it is only the engine, you dont get any of what was in the HL SDK. You have 2 write all that yourself. Valve seem 2 want to make a way to allow you 2 charge for MODs, so that might suit you.

whoa whoa what? charging rates to use HL2 SDK and create a game then pay their fees to distribute? fill me in here :)

Yep, the feature in Steam can be really good if you use it the right way.

if theres a god no good mods will charge to play, if its a dollar, that's still too much.

You will be able to get the Half-Life 2 SDK for free.

Yes, Valve are going to give mod teams the ability to charge for their mods.

"HL2 $750,000

UT2k3 = $500,000

Lithtech = $250,000

Q3A = $150,000

Quake1 = $10,000

Valve is pulling all the bad tricks really."

As if that guy knows shit.

Been long know, people can sell mods via Steam, similar to selling HL2. I still doubt any mod would be worth it though. Not a single one I have seen for HL has been.

Edit: depends on the cost of course. A symbolical sum of $1 to play a really good mod isnt that bad :)

3/4 of a million for an engine? I don't think so!

And Quake 1 is free, so is Quake 2.

I thought they were freely available, but not free to use commercially.
