What do you use to make models of guns? Like which program would you suggest. And is there a modeling program that has like a 30 day free trail or do I have to buy one.

There are a lot of modelling programs to use...
The undustry standards are 3d studio max, Alias wavefront Maya, Softimage XSI, and Newtek Lightwave, but all those programs will run you from $2,000 to around $6,000!
But there are cheap and free tools as well! From what we've heard valve is going to give a free "lite" version of softimage xsi with Hl2. Also you can check out http://www.discreet.com to get Gmax, which is a free version of 3d studio max, or you could try http://www.aliaswavefront.com to get the free version of maya (maya ple), lightwave also has a discover edition but if you want to make hl2 models i wouldn't get it because from what i've read there aren't gonna be any import/export scripts.

Also do a google search for milkshape 3d, or wings 3d i belive wings is free, but milkshape costs around $20 i think.

:) hope that helps!

Thanks...I downloaded the gmax program. Are the models I make going to be able to be used in HL2?

Also I can't seem to find any tutorials on how to model. Do you know of any good ones I could use?

wow thanks :)

*Edit* A lot of those aren't working for me...

Hey pressure back a discreet.com they have a tutorial bundle you can download for gmax, not sure where its at exactly (that site is confusing to navigate) but there is some pretty useful stuff there too also try this http://www.gmaxsupport.com you should find the tuts there, and check out those forums too, sometimes you can get some quick answers there

Oh and nice sites there 3ddul thanks for that!

Oh BTW pressure, you asked if you can use your models in hl2, well im not %100 sure cuz its not out yet, but im sure someone will write some converter scripts or what not if they are needed, and since gmax is basicallly 3d studio max, and they've said 3ds max, maya, and softimage are supported with the sdk i think you should be fine...(if not, softimage xsi learning edition is supposed to ship with the game, so for sure it will work :) )

These tutorials are for making maps... I used to use this gmax for making q3 maps on a mod i was working for :) But are there any tutorials on objects.

have ya tried out http://www.3dbuzz.com become a member and you can download tutorial videos and watch them, they are pretty sweet...just get the 3ds max videos, they are pretty much identical to gmax, so you shouldn't have any problems there :)

I tried doing one of the tutroials but theres a lot of features in 3D Studio Max that aren't in GMax. Do you know if it is possible to download a trial of 3D Studio Max or if I can't how much does it cost?

Thjere is no trial version. It's very expensive, but there are alternate methods (which I personally dislike...)
You
Kan't
Attempt to
Zee it until you see

i have 3dsmax5, and i am a total newb at it, can some1 post tutorials for Newbs (and i mean complate newb like me). tnxs

i recommend getting the xsi \ exp edition www.softimage.com/exp
i'm pretty sure i read somewhere that hl2 is gonna ship with it. soo when it does, it will include a hl2 exporter.

i highly recommend wings 3d as well.
its free, and allot of professional 3d guys i know can't stop talking about how great it is. ( its got a steep learning curve.. but they have forums and a community thats building an online manual/tuts ect.. )
