ok, try to take one scene/part/idea of a movie you like, picture it as it was real and you were in charge of it.
obviously choosing "realistic" movies will yield more serious results.
ok, i'm a huge sci-fi fan and i like those "realistic" types of sci-fi. just a bit earlier i finished re-watching Aliens, the directors cut, which is even more awesome than the theatrical version (recommend it).
i know it's easier to play general after the battle, but let's use logic here.
let's say i was in charge of the marines.
the first thing that really bothered was the equipment used. by the data Ripley gave they should have known that the aliens were organic. and by the fact that their operation would be in close quarters. obviously i'd equip them with hollow points instead of the AP they used. ditch the smart guns and bring in 12 gauge semi-autos. two flamers max. light body armor silicon impregnated (due to acid, personally i think Scott overdid it with this acid blood thingy, but ok).
personally if i was in command i'd pull them out at the first sign of danger (the chestburster), since i'm cautious by nature. regroup and plan next move.
the marines should know due to ripley's report that they are stealth killers, frontal assault is less likely, so pay attention to ducts and holes and no separating. groups of 3 minimum.
hmm...what else, nah, i'll leave it to you if you wanna analyze it further. yeas it would be a sucky movie, but hey we presumed it was real life.
a bit off topic: even though i admire Cameron's attention to detail and sense for practicality.
but in reality when people will be making some beginner steps to proper colonization and terraforming planet. technology will be much different.
let's say we discover a planet near our solar system where we could travel with some form of cryogenics and not take an eternity. i'd say 200 years from now.
my vision of a soldier (if we even still have armed forces by that time) of that age would be semi robotic or heavily genetically modified. i'd say the only real thing left intact by that age would be the brain, everything else will probably be artificially enhanced.
which means higher physical endurance and strength, improved vision and additional light specters visible.
hugely improved armor and overall toughness (crysis nanosuit type).
as for weapons, i think we'll stick to propelling object for some time. probably some kind of particle/energy weapons will become effective by that time.
i think an organism like the alien would have very little chance against a future super soldier.
