Molten Crossbow

I just got my HL2 issue of PCGamer and was reading and reading and reading some more till i got to page 120. Then i sat and thought to myself why does the freaking crossbow look like it fires pieces of molten rebar.

Anyone else think this? Or am i just a missguided moron in need of a slapping?

Thoughts...

i definetly noticed that. the bolts look radioactive and about 1/2 an inch thick. definetly not normal crossbow bolts.

Maybe they have some sort of burning properties?

Also, that crossbow looks significantly beefed up since HL. all kinds of electronics taped on. maybe something added?

A little off topic, I'm sorry. But do we have a confirmed list of all the weapons yet? Not sure if I really wanna know, spoiler and all that, but... do we?

Yeah, I thought the same thing. I hope it's explained, rather than just "Hey, it's a crossbow."

I think HL has always been good with explaining itself. Remember when u first got that radiation gun in HL1? Who cud 4get, brilliant way to introduce the power and possible danger of the weapon.
The alien arm which fires homing gnats or whatever they are... well... we've had them fired at us b4 so we know what to expect.

I trust if anything needs xplaining it will be xplained.

Except maybe some of the plot, leave us to do some thinking, as in Half Life.

uh Greg Coomer said that the crossbow ammo is electrically charged by the crossbow when its ready to fire, so they glow

showing metal heating is one of sources things.. so you will see alot of metal heating up and melting or blowing up because of it..

good times eh?
hell yes.

I don't doubt you, but when the hell did he say that? and where?

no, no list of confirmed weapons - i'm hoping for some surprises. also, please spell words like "before" "explained" "could" and "forget" you sound like you come from the AIM Girls forum.

sorry for the double post.

I'm doing an english degree as well!
There's irony 4 ya

I hope that the heat distortion effects are present when the metal heats up (i.e. the volcanoe level in Far Cry).

yeah we got to wait until the game comes out peole than all quesitons will be answered concerning weapons

what about pinning people to walls, sizzling flesh, writhing combines, etc? I like the potential.

I'm pretty sure it was confirmed you could pin your enemies down with it.

that i remember. i really don't know where greg coomer said it was a molten glowing electric crossbow though.

Either by VALVe or one of the guys who went to VALVe HQ and played the game, I think it was.

perhaps the arrows are color coded to signify different arrow types? prolly not since different types of ammo are not HL style. they're just that color to look good, or maybe so If you can pick them back up, you cand find them more easily. It would be cool if NCPs had cross bows and you could see the orange-yellow arrows zinging around.

im sorry but the gravity gun is the best
maybe they are loaded with whatever powers the gravity gun to get the arrows to pack an extra punch when they impact. ya know, that orangy glowing stuff in the manipulator.

can someone post a pic of the crossbow??? i let some stupid moron borrow my pcgamer and he hasnt given it back ... grrrrr

a rail gun charges a rod of steel between magnets to accelerate it, and uses some other force (such as compressed air) to start the projectile(like a bowstring).

http://www.powerlabs.org/railgun2.htm

maybe it's a railbowgun...LOL

A railgun works by utilising the fact that an object with an electric current flowing through it will move at an angle to that current if a magnetic field is introduced at yet another angle.

Most railguns use two rails to supply both the electrical current (say, right to left through the slug) and the magnetic field (generated by the flow of current through the rails, actually circular, but the bit running through the slug goes from bottom to top).

It really needs a diagram, but I believe that a way you can get a feel for the situation is by holding your (right?) hand out flat, with your thumb at a right angle to your fingers. If your palm is the slug, and your thumb indicates the flow of current through said slug, and your fingers show the direction of the magnetic field, then the slug will move at an angle jutting directly out of your palm.

I need to find my physics books. This is stuff I learned 3+ years ago, and I'm not sure it's entirely accurate.

check my link...even has videos....some kid in university....very cool stuff. He's done quite a few fun things...they have pictures of the fastest...on a truckbed....like 18 wheeler truck...

Graphite slugs are the key...

[EDIT]: Or mercury, now I come to think of it. Mercury globs work too.

nobody knows where greg coomer said that the slugs would glow?

if you look closely at the end of the bolt ... theres no POINT TO IT ... no arrowhead or whatever. .. it just stops ... how lame ... erghghgh i'm mad

I would of like to seen an huge arrow instead of that, but whatever....im sure its cool when u use it

p.s. gordon needs a sniper rifle

The crossbow will be the sniper rifle, and if you look close there is a lightening bolt along side of the ammo cartridge, my guess is that the arrows not only impale, but electricute too.

hopefully faster than the first one, took about 2 minutes to get where it was supposed to go.....killing those bastards in xen sucked
