What brightness/contrast settings do you use for your monitor?

I usually use maximum (100) contrast, cause I like when black is black and white is white, not shades of gray. However it's hard to see when dark images are being displayed sometimes, so I counter that with 25 brightness, or 50 when it's bright in my room (sometimes even 100 if the sun is shining on my monitor; I don't have proper curtains on my window).

When it's rather dark in my room (one small light only) I sometimes go down to 25 brightness/75 contrast, because it tends to hurt my eyes a bit otherwise; however if I'm playing something I usually go up with the values a bit, so as not to be at a disadvantage. For example, at 25/100 in CS:S (and Valve games in general) I need to move the gamma slider to the left (brightest setting) to see the test image correctly.

I sometimes wonder if my monitor settings are not too dark, because of the above example and because sometimes people post rather dark images and I have to select them to see what's in them (in Firefox selecting an image makes it brighter). Also when I take photos with my camera, they may look fine on the LCD screen, but when I view them on my PC, they're too dark.

But if I turn up the settings, my eyes hurt from the brightness and turning down contrast so the colours aren't as "strong", makes them look a bit ugly to me >_<.

Hence the original question.

I use 60 brightness and 50 contrast, although it really depends on the monitor/user preference. Dark images that are hard to distinguish may be due to the fact that you are using a TN panel, which tend to lose detail when displaying blacks. This is known as "black crush".
