I'm having a problem with half-life 2 that I'm hoping maybe someone has some familiarity with. See, I used to have a radeon 9700 pro, and the game ran fine. I recently purchased an nvidia 6600gt, and I'm running into this problem during the intro movie of the game. Just after the G-man says, "your time has come once again", my monitor suddenly turns off, and the pc becomes non responsive. I've tried all sorts of drivers for my card, tried not locking the refresh rates in, basically everything I can think of, to no avail.

I'm wondering if either someone knows what the exact problem is here, or failing that, if someone knows a command I can enter or something I can do to skip the intro movie, as my thinking is that the game will run fine if I can just get past that point. Thanks!

Hey you will start a war on here telling people you have taken an ATI card out and put an Nvidia card in your system

Seriously though have you tried putting your ATI card back in your system to see if HL2 still runs ok with it? The reason I ask that is because it will show if the problem is really with the Nvidia card or something is wrong with your computer.

One thing you could try with your Nvidia card is going into the system folder in the control panel, click on properties and turn down the hardware slider a bit and see if that helps.

Also this may seem obvious have you tried pushing the card to make sure it is fully seated in the AGP slot?

When your monitor turns off does it power right down or go onto standby?

What is the power rating of your PSU it may not have enough power to run your system with the new card?

Sorry to ask sso many questions but your answers will help myself or other people to advise you, ok.

One more thought.
I don't know what the specs are for the ATI & Nvidia cards are but if the ATI card works on a AGP speed of X4 and the Nvida runs on AGP of X8 you will need to change that value in your BIOS.

When you get your post screen come up it will tell you how to get into set up, also check what voltage your AGP slot is running at the spec for your Nvidia card should tell you what it should be. Also check how much memory is allocated in the BIOS for your graphics you could put that number higher if it is low.

Sorry if you know about that only it is easy to overlook changing those settings.

I get the same thing but not at the same part. It happens randomly. It's bloody annoying though becuase my PC won't reset or even power off once this has happened & the monitor won't come back so I can see if I've actually got any error messages. Usually I have to pull the plug at the mains in order to get my PC back up. This results in XP displaying a 'recovered from fatal error' message. No s**t!

got the same problem with the 9800xt 256mb card. monitor switches it self off and have to reset computer. only happens with HL2 one of many bugs i think
