The price of flat panel TVs and monitors is expected to drop towards the end of the year, and won't pick up until 2011.

I don't have the article in front of me as I read it a week ago, but apparently, Samsung (producer of ~40% of all RAM), suggests that lower PC sales has created an oversupply of RAM, which means the price of RAM should drop towards year end.

This is all very timely, as Black Friday and Boxing Day are already ideal times to make a purchase, but especially regarding RAM and flat panel monitors this year.

I work with TVs all day, and yes the price is ridiculous now. I seen a 40" Sony LCD for $570! Best Buy has a Panasonic 50" Plasma, with a great Hz and Internet Apps you name it for like $1100

I have been considering picking up another 4GB of RAM on Black Friday.

I don't know if I can even use 8GB? I'll open up every application that I've got, because I can?

Anyone?

Not replacing it, it's an upgrade to 8GB. :p

Man I still remember when the first plasma tvs started appearing on the market, and one was like $9000-$10000.

When I had like Firefox, Steam, Photoshop CS5, Word, Notepad++ and more shit open at the same time while playing TF2(and many other modern games) it used to cause a lot of framedrops, and programs took long to 'wake up(from pagefile)'.
Since I went from 4 to 8GB that doesn't happen anymore.

Who needs a fast HDD/SSD when you don't even have to close your programs?(+Hibernate/Sleep)

bah. I need 4gbs of some G.Skill DDR2 ram, sadly the prices are around 100$ for a set.

QUESTION

I have 2x1GB ddr2-800 (installed), and 2x512MB ddr2-667 (in blister pack). They are both performance-geared memory with heatsinks. Would it be possible to use both sets at once without encountering large performance drops from losing dual-channel functionality (only works when using one two-stick set) and having different amounts of memory in each stick? The two sets would each be in their own DIMM slot pair, to be sure. I have a feeling the 667 can be overclocked to 800 fairly easily.

I've been thinking of picking up another 4GB.

Would laptop memory drop as well? Could use another 4gb in this laptop.

Been waiting for ages to get a decent manufacturer TV for my room. It has literally been 12 months of waiting as I want LED but can only really afford LCD. Since the article says things should bottom out at the end of the year I'm going to buy then. Also VAT goes up to 20% in 2011 in the UK, I reckon retailers will do an early January sale this year prior to VAT increase.

Any unknown advice you can give with buying a TV, warped? Or anyone know any reliable e-tailers for the UK?

I believe it would drop the memory speeds because the 800 has to accommodate the 667. Please correct me if I'm wrong guys.

They say it's all DRAM, so that would include laptop memory as well.

One thing I'm not sure of: suggestions seemed to indicate that the 2GiB chips would be cheaper, while maybe not so for the large ones. The 2GiB chips would be used to create 2GB sticks. So, I'm not sure how much the price of 4GB sticks of RAM could drop, if any. But if you're looking at 2x 2GB, you should be good to go.

I'm personally going to be looking at both. Would be nice to have 2x 4GB sticks instead of 4x 2GB, because people 'who seem to know what they are talking about' suggest that it's harder on a memory controller (less stable), the more sticks you use - however I'm not sure if that is the case if you aren't overclocking it.

The other thing that they were suggesting is that RAM won't be as fast when you have more sticks. But I don't recall the reasoning. It wasn't the clock speed, it was something else, perhaps just the way the RAM is accessed from the memory controller. However, I don't know how this applies to different configurations, for example, an i5 or i7 CPU with the memory controller built in, or some such.

Finally, I've heard people saying that some motherboards freak out if you have more than the normal amount of RAM, like, reading reviews of RAM or motherboards, people might say that the 2nd set of RAM didn't work - though that is perhaps fixed in a motherboard BIOS update, I don't know.

So, all in all... damn man. Should I add more or replace with more? I am sure it should be fine either way; just sayin'.

I have an LED monitor, it's pretty sweet. I am interested in a 240Hz 3D LED monitor next, maybe in 5 or more years. You can already get a 120hz 3D monitor, but I haven't seen any LED 3D monitors yet. Especially being that both are new technology, it will carry a price premium, obviously.

Basically, the higher the hz the less ghosting when the screen pans, etc. And it's required for 3D. Also importantly is that the framerate of movies is 24 FPS, which is a divisible of 120hz and 240hz (matched to the refresh rate), meaning smoother and more accurate frame rate during movies. Besides for movies, I just like the idea of 240hz for gaming and 3D (120hz per eye). Reminder: this technology isn't available yet.

So how much of a drop are we talking here? Monitors really need to drop.

By the end of this month, LCD TV prices will be about 5% lower than they were at the same time last year, according research firm DisplaySearch. But a tailspin will start in October: In the last three months of the year, the firm forecasts that prices will keep falling until they bottom out at 12% below 2009 levels.

Note that they are expected to go back up in 2011.

Meh, I managed to nab a Panasonic 46" plasma for $700 at Walmart last year. I've yet to see a deal that comes anywhere close to that. Plasma > LCD for me by far, regardless of if it's LED or not. Superior viewing angles, black levels, more vibrant colors, no input lag, and smoother motion.

I thought the problem was that they don't last long.

Anyway, I'm just glad to see the 240Hz LED 3D monitors making their appearance already! I thought the 120Hz would be taking the lead for like 5 years. The only thing left that I would want is for it to have Gorilla glass, so it would have no frame (also, maybe touch screen).

Oh, and monitor sized, please.

OK, so the time is now. A quick glance at newegg and it looks like RAM is about 40% cheaper. So the predictions are right. And it looks to fall just a little more through the first half of next year.

The price of high-end 2GB DDR3 (double data rate, third generation) DRAM modules declined to US$25 in the first half of November, down 46 percent from its peak of US$46.50 in the first half of this year, according to DRAMeXchange. The market researcher forecast the price will fall to US$20 by the end of this year.

Uh, high end DDR3 ram was not $45.00 at any point in this year. Still isn't.

Unless they're talking about the price retailers pay, in which case RAM mark-up is a lot more than I ever would have guessed.

I don't know exactly what they are referring to honestly, but I looked at newegg, and RAM that has been $80-$95 since as long as I can remember, is now about 40% cheaper. The RAM I am interested in buying, for example, is like $30 cheaper ($63 for 2x2GB) (the kit that matches what I have, so I could double my RAM)

Like, here is 4GB for only $50: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231277

I looked at all the RAM on Black Friday last year, because that's when I built my computer. I can assure you, there's no way you could get 4GB of DDR3 for $50 last year, it was about $93.

Sorted DDR3, by price, if anyone is actually shopping: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...66&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=20
Speed : DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Capacity : 4GB (2 x 2GB)
