The way I see it, this is mostly down to the social stigma that females face by becoming involved with computers.
Most people physically freak out when they see me playing doom 3 or something.. they don't understand how a girl can enjoy killing grotesque monsters amidst fireballs and bloodspray.
Its not part of society as it stands now to have girls doing that, and so there are not many who do.
Forums are similar. Females are generally more sociable than males (on a base level anyway), and so you would expect them to be more prevalent on forums, but thats not the case. Mostly because girls aren't "supposed" to be into computers...
Hell there are always exceptions though, but usually, there is a price to pay when you are an exception.. I remember other jealous girls in my school who just got the shits with me being so "techie", or who looked down on me because I was quieter and less slutty than them.. ah well.
I'd be glad to answer any serious questions that people might have..
