You guys are getting spanked by Moddb.com

Go find some news. The Zombie Panic Source update wasn't even mentioned and it's the biggest HL2 mod right now.

Oh god we're a site for Valve games and a mod site is beating us to news about mods, oh nooooooooooo.

Cry some more, and if you want to be productive, post it yourself.

Set up the watch tower, KA. We'll be ready for the next set of news waves.

If you think something is newsworthy, submit it as news - [email protected]

We're not trying to "compete" with moddb.

ModDB sucks (maybe it was always terrible) in these days. They gone crazy after the big change.

We're not trying to compete with moddb as Pi said. If you have some mod news you want us to think about posting, then send us a mail.

We all live busy lives (me especially right now) and we can't all afford the time to go finding every last bit of mod news.

Oh and most of the time when I do post mod news people complain about mod team splits and the fact that the mod isn't releasing any gameplay footage etc.

Don't be so scathing, the site's name is Half-Life 2, not Valve Games.

And I think his complaint is that no mod news is getting to the front page. This could be an issue with not enough mods submitting news to HL2.net at the time of posting, or it could be a general policy of HL2.net to de-focus on mods.

Gotta love the right to give opinion without justification.

1. It's still creating user traffic, complaints or praise. The more users posting more comments, the more people getting more info on Valve games.
2. For most mod teams, getting coverage helps give them momentum to keep on doing what they're already doing. A few people complaining they haven't got their free mod yesterday is not going to bother anyone.
3. By mod team splits I'm guessing you're talking about FireArms: Source. People need to know which is which so they can support the team that actually deserves support.
4. Did you ever question why mods don't submit news to HL2.net anymore? Could it possibly be because they don't see any mod news on the frontpage so they assume the site simply stopped caring?

You may not be in direct competition with Moddb, but it's pretty saddening that that site gives more support to mod teams using an engine and dev tools launched with Half-Life 2 than a site whose very name is halflife2.net. Your very own Source mod listing is out of date and even contains errors, whereas the Moddb Source mod listing is more up-to-date and generally a more trustworthy source of info.

I don't see moddb tracking Half-life, Valve, L4D, TF2 etc news? I wonder if it's because they are moddb and we are halflife2.net.

I think we should revert back to 2004 and have HL2 announced again.

Anyone prepared to leak a HL2 [strike]beta[/strike]?

By its very name, the implication is that halflife2.net should cover everything to do with HL2. By its very name, the implication is that the Moddb is a database for mods, which it is and more.

As part of its community support, Valve announced in September 2008 that several mods, with more planned in the future, were being integrated into the Steamworks program, allowing the mods to make full use of Steam's distribution and update capabilities.

If Valve are supporting mods, why isn't halflife2.net?

I notice that Evo has run some BM news on the front page. Is this a concession?

I also notice that your 'About Us' page has no mention of mods, but the front page has a link to an (outdated) mod list. Why not just admit that this site doesn't cover mods and drop the official mod support so people don't complain about it? Having the modding forums is one thing, it's an added extra which is community-led. But the mod list is officialised on the front page but doesn't seem to have any one member of staff doing it justice.

Mixed messages.

Nah, BM:S submitted news to the news email, I had a spare 5 mins and decided to do a quick post about it.

Nice to see people jumping the gun a bit.

We do post mod news, we will post every decent bit of news we can get our hands on. We just don't have many active news posters right now. We also rely a lot on our [email protected] address for people to post news but this just isn't done very often. Most mod teams only email us news 4 days after they posted it on the site. I've got a 48 hour news policy. If we miss news in that time it doesn't get posted at all. If teams want their news posted - tell us when you post it.

With regard to the mod list. I don't actively search out mods to add to the list. Again I wait for people to request to be added. Everyone who has requested addition to the list has been added. If you know of any errors please let me know. I'm not ignoring errors, I've simply misplaced my crystal ball that normally alerts me to such problems.

We could do more with mods but I don't have the backend or staff to maintain it properly yet.

Okay, so basically reactive as opposed to proactive. Mods need to be proactive so hl2.net can be reactive. Thanks for clearing that up.

I suspected it had something to do with mods not using the news address, but that still doesn't explain how Off Limits is listed as a released mod, when it isn't.

Perhaps if any of us actually made money for the time we spend writing news posts and doing site content like the mod listing, we would be a bit more proactive rather than reactive. Alas, we are but volunteers.

I've had vague plans in my head for a comprehensive Source mods listing/directory along with news, downloads, media, and reviews (a Source-specific moddb more or less, except the mod teams generally wouldn't write the content as they do on Moddb). Once I have a bit more free time (which isn't right now or the near future... University's a plateful and exams on top of that) I'm going to at some point code a backend for such a system and get to work on the content, and HL2net will satisfy all of your Valve-related mod needs.

In the meantime, Crispy, Watchtower and anybody else who would like us to post more news, please do notify us at [email protected] if you see news that we may deem worthy of the frontpage. It'd be a great help!

Does moddb have sexy asian girls in bikinis?
