hey Munro :)

this is an official plea to u for more mods.
we need mods for different times of the day (and night) and well considering its getting closer to the release of the game.. it seems like the forums have picked up just as many trolls.

case in point this thread with Platini trolling freely.

i noticed a few times over the past week this has happened and i used the report to moderators button but none of them were around (this is not a slight at u mods :) )

so please just for a little while.. more mods would help.
thanks :)

edit: and it looks like Abom took care of the troll in that thread but still.

i think we could use more mods...pple that browse the site at different times.

We don't need more mods, really. There are already 20+ staff on the forums, having more would be such an overcrowd. You already know that usually we'll hit down on any trouble within a short period of time, but there's always going to be a few exceptions when staff members can't cover the forums for a small period.

Besides, you only reported Platini about 10 minutes ago, and it got sorted soon after the report came in. We rely on you people alot, as well. We can't cover every single post of every single topic all the time.

TBH if we had any more, all we would be doing is stepping on each others toes, like abom said it would be way to crowded

If we have too many mods, we'd end up like a police state, and imagine how all the users would complain then and pine for the good old days where the worst it would get is Abom, Pi and myself putting OTT mod makers in their place.

Course I still think we've room for one more moderator. and I still say it should be ******, afterall I was right about the other two making good mods :)

aight, fine, point noted guys :)

but still.. i have seen (recently) pple taking advantage of the fact that u guys are not around and troll to their heart's content :|

yeah i hope more pple use that "report to moderator" button when needed.

I think mr munro should let some more mods guard the big board (that is, the hl2 forum). I sometimes see alot of things, but i cant do anything... i have to write about it in the IRC channel (and sometimes get "I cant do anything either"). Not that i want more power, but that would fix some problems.

I don't think more mods are needed, just a wider timezone spread.

Well, I agree with Maj, all mods should be allowed to moderate all the forums.

Taht would most definetly reduce the problem to near zero

oi, thats my line :)

Hunt me down on quakenet, I'm pretty much ALWAYS here ;o

Or MSN me, thats fine too :)

The solution to problems such as this is not to make more mods. When a mod goes to bed, wakes up and gets back online, some thread, maybe the "secret hl2 website" will have 10 more pages of posts. That's only one thread too!

Simply put, mods will not be able/willing to read EVERY post.

So... You essentially give all members EXTREMELY limited mod powers (hear me out now) by making it easy to report them tom a real mod/staff member.

If no one reads a post, who cares what it says? If someone reads a post and knows the poster has broken the rules (by trollong, flaming, etc. ) they can report it to a mod to handle. 20+ staff is enough to ban and issue warnings.

We already have that with the 'report post' button in the upper-right-hand corner of each post. ;)

listen to the mods... they just dont want to share their power!

its like LOTR, Munro is sauron and he gave mod powers (the rings) to the leaders of men (fenric, Badgy, PI, Chris etc) and now they have become ring wraiths!
their greed for the rings, wont allow them to share.... wait a sec... oh Im awake, my mistake.

ur raising a good point here.
if the staff want designated areas for whatever reason, thats fine but in cases where mods of a particular section (such as Generl HL2 Discussion) are not available... another mod should be allowed to step in.

:O

That did make me giggle but bad mental images ;(

Hm. I concur though. Usually, I browse these forums primarily at night. Around this time 'til about 2AM, sometimes later. I usually see all sorts of spam, trolling, etc in the HL2 Discussion board while the European mods are asleep. That's generally where I read most of my posts, too.

Oh well, the mods do need a wider timezone spread, as was said.

Aye... Hepatitis C, anyone?

I think, as Varsity already stated, that more mods are not necessarily needed, just a wider variety of location. Most of the staff being English leads quite a security gap when I I do my primary forum viewing (5-12 pm for me, 1 - 7 for the Muffins :p) and I hate to see the 4th "omg I just found the hl2 website! it r half-life2.com!1!11" and the repeated threads about Vivendi shutting down Sierra...

The thing is, we can't actually see the scale of the problem. We'd see the scale of the problem by how many reported posts we'd get. Last night there was two. Now either you're not using them, or there's not as much trouble as you think.

EDIT:

Scrap what I just said. I completely concur. That HL2 Discussion forum was quite messy this morning :E

Don't think hl2.net really need mods, just need someone to go through and delete spam. There is so much spam on these forums it isn't even funny. Like on Merc's 'I'm going to visit valve today' thread there was about 400 posts in it just either asking if merc had gotten back/if he was lieing/demanding pictures. All of his other topics got locked because people just started spamming like crazy. Like even lately theres been total spam topics(i.e. Striders can be killed-I commented about the massive spam).

All we need right now is a reshuffle, giving more access to our current staff which will happen this weekend so we should see an improvement. Just keep using that 'report post' button and we'll get to troublesome posts more quickly.

How would moderators take care of spam while they sleep? ;)

I get the idea though.. take the few mods that can take care of it and give them the ability to do so. Good plan, as long as it works.

We've got a big team of people from many different countries covering different timezones, at least one of us chaps is awake at any one time.

yay!

Well, except from simmo of course ;)

I thought there were only English and Eastern American mods...

Well Sweden has a similar timezone to the English, so that doesn't help. You guys need more Americans or Canadians.

me and soupy are scottish! and yes its a real country, bitches :)

Timezone's are still similar for Scots (haggis) and English (Tea)

personally i dont think the timezones cause any problem because we all ignore them anyway, its 2am here, which is the middle of my day.
