Well, the announcement of Oblivion sparked me to fire up Morrowind again. Unfortunately, the copy I have is for Xbox, and it's not the GOTY version either, which means these things:
1.) There are an obscene amount of bugs, including one in which a really important character disappeared.
2.) There's no enemy health bar.
3.) There's no sortable journal.
4.) There are none of the expansion packs.

Also, because it's for Xbox,
1.) There are no mods.
2.) The controls can be slightly akward.
3.) The framerate is terrible, and there's nothing I can do about it.
4.) There are no console commands, so I can't fix the main quest if I accidentally kill someone.
5.) Load times make me want to rip my heart out with a spoon.

Obviously, these are some pretty heavy disadvantages. I got it for Xbox in the first place as a gift, and not knowing what Morrowind really was at the time, I had no reason to exchange it for the PC version. But all of the talk of mods on this board has made me really jealous. My question is this:

Is it worth it to buy the PC Game of the Year edition?
I would get all of the expansions, the capability for mods, and bug fixes brought about by patches. The GOTY edition costs $30 dollars. Would the game run smoothly on a 2.2 gHz processor with a Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card? Would the added benefits be worth the cost?

Yes its very worth buying the PC version, the sheer number of mods and the things they allow and open up in the game, the way it improves everything so much (not BSing you, they do make a HUGE difference)

It really makes it an entirely different game.

And yeah it'll run ok on your system, though it'll still bog down sometimes, but then Morrowind always will, get hold of the fps_optimizer though, that'll help improve framerates.

Since you seem to be the Morrowind guru around here, could you direct me towards some good mods for beginners, or at least a site that outlines which ones are important to have?
Thanks.

That is where i get all my mods. On the bottem, it tells you what catagories the mod is in. Personally i just make sure there is no "cheat" on the bottem, that usually means its balanced with the rest of the game.
Just click on mod database.
You can also create your own with the TES Construction Set, mod files are usually small. You simply load up the morrowind launcher, click data files, and then click on the mods you want. Put the mods in your Morrowind\Data Files directory folder.
Personally Morrowind Optimizer didn't do to much for me, but I've heard its done dreams for others.

Betheda should really release morrowinds source code, as ID has done with Quake 1(Which people have made...look...nearly as good as some of Doom 3's stuff). Then we could try n get that bug out of there and MASSIVLY increase frame rates.

There are also a few total conversions. I remember one LOTR one that looked pretty good(though wasn't done)

Minerel's link, and an old thread I listed all the mods I had installed which should be a good start to work from I guess.

Funny, I just did a search and found your list. It looks great, and I can see how it would be worth it to buy it just for the mods. Lighted up windows!

get the the PC GOTY edition. it's awesome value for money as you'll most probably get months worth of entertainment from it.

but be aware that you'll forget to eat/wash, your room will be a minefield of half eaten takeaways strewn accross the floor and half finished cups of tea decorating your desk, and you'll end up with a glasgow tan. this game eats your life...but it's still huge fun :D

just so you know what you're letting yourself in for :)

Oh, believe me, I already have the Xbox version, so my life has already been ripped to shreds. I'm just trying to eliminate any remaining life that I have.

I wanted to get into this game but it was too slow at the beginning for me. Also when I did get somewhere I accidently hit someone and then it saved and he kept killing me when I reloaded. I'll try it again some day.

edit: OMG 600 POST!

ive been playing morrowind GOTY on PC on and off fo nearly a year now. I love it, the mods are great. Yes the expansions add alot to the game. I would get it on PC

Also on PC you can download new models, the old ones look VERY low res, does'nt effect gameplay, but having high res models looks nicer :)

Ritz, you got any links to some new good models? Also, will it knock down any more fps by to much?

Well, no one in my entire city has the GOTY version. Looks like Half.com or Amazon.com is my only hope.

I know amazon.com has Tribunal for like 20 bucks (including shipping and handling). Tribunal = expansion. The GOTY version i'd think to be around 30 (including shipping and handling)
