Most gruesome wargame?

I was reading a preview of this just yesterday. It looks to have some real potential towards exploring war's nastier side. (I do think we need a good counterbalance to the Medal-Of-Honor no blood aproach)

Yeah, as if making a game that puts you in the role of killing people will allow people to see the gruesome qualities of war? A game where you can save, and die, then live again at the press of a key? eh.

Also, the problem is, people experiment in games. I dunno about you, but the last time I played a game, no matter how realistic it was, I felt no remorse killing an enemy and playing with his dead body to see how well the ragdoll reacts. I don't feel overly saddened killing an allied NPC if he serves no purpose and won't effect my mission, I don't feel any sense of realism in games.
Stuff like that allows people to even further desensitize themselves.. (well, in my opinion, anyway)

Games, atleast for now, can't have that effect, because, people will just say "it's a game."

I disagree that violent games desensatize you (Actually, most gamers are bothered by actual violence)

I myself can hardly stand the sight of blood, yet in UT I always gib opponents, in MP2 I would play with ragdolls, in farcry I tried slicing a guy in half with a machine gun....

yet, in RL, I can't stand the sight of blood, the sound of breaking bones....even descriptions of having to crack a persons ribcage to get to the heat sickens me.

yeppers. I'm sooo desensatized. ;)

well, lol, desensitized was a poor choice of words.. either way.

What I meant to say was, I don't think games, in their current state, can convey the actual gruesomeness of war.

I don't think its a technical limitation, rather an ideological one. Developers are understandably intimidated by trying to show war in a way thats both realistic and respectful inside of a game. I think it can be done, but it must be done right, and done carefully.

ShellShock: Nam '67 sure looks good, will be interesting to see how Guerrilla make the game as realistic as possible. And to show how the Vietnam War really was…

Pff... Any first person game will mean you cant die to progress the story. The most gruesome games are in 2D, and known as the Close Combat series. No small squads, no rambo tactics, just your men dying.

Definition of gruesome may vary;

4 soldiers taking on 40 enemies that gets blown into pieces, stabbed, shot, napalmed and burned (and possibly stabbed again).

3 squads of 20 men taking on an entrenched machinegun nest, and every last one gets killed while constantly screaming and yelling.

Take your pick on the one that shows gruesome warfare.

Actually ShellShock is a 3'de person view game, which I think is good. Everyone play FPS now, could be fun to have a little variation.

Close Combat is in my opinion graphical. Very realistic battles and just a great series. No game that I’ve played has had any kind of non-patriotic feeling like this.

Pffff, its THE best series :)

There have been some attempts at doing it in 3D and a bit more up and personal, but I've never liked any of them. Kind of fun that 2D still reigns supreme :)
Would be cool seeing a city wargame with the Ganglands engine though...

I agree. Close Combat should actually be in 2D always in my opinion. Anyway, I kind of liked Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin, and it was 3D... pretty realistic battles there though.

I remember when I played a mission in Combat Mission, I played as the Russians. You had about 4-5 IS-2 and a couple of SU-120 (don’t remember exactly what type of SU it was), they were huge as a house!
And the Germans had a couple of Tiger's and Panthers (the Panthers god wiped out pretty quick by the IS-2).

Very even battle between us too… I won, but only a Minor Victory though

finally, i think its a bit sick portraying war is a pretty thing..

i say good job, war was hell.. it should be shown as such

I wonder if anyone will ever do a great war fist person shooter. Ah, first person static warfare. Move an inch, sniped. Go to fetch water, shelled. Trip off gangplanks, sink into mud and drown in the everpresent cesspool under your feet.

Not to get off topic, but trying to check into gamespot lately.. Whats with this content delivery system of theirs, is there any way to get around it? Yes, I feel much more secure with a 'secure download plugin' ("oh no, they hacked my .avi download!"). No, is it spyware? Coulden't be!

yay gory game. teaches little kids that one man cant really be a hero.
er.... unless they are heroes, that is....
or they are very, very lucky.
hmmm..... come to think of it gore doesnt make you less of a hero....
im confused.

A great Realistic wargame was operation flashpoint, maybe not as gruesome as ShellShock: Nam '67, but definitly more realistic(as far as i can tell from the movie)

It wasnt gruesome at all. It never gave the feel of *WAR*... Excellent squad combat though, its still unbeaten.

The only game I know of beside Close Combat that is capable of giving the *WAR* feel is Savage, oddly enough. What's even more odd is that its full MP. But its fight scenes are pure mayhem... No small 3 on 3 where you fight with automatic rifles. Here its mostly 10 on 10, in fastpaced and bloody hand to hand combat.

I think this game looks to be pretty good. I really don't see why most war games shy away from violence. It's pretty ironic that the most violent and bloody war of our time, WW2, usually receives "T" ratings. Actually I think that's pretty disrespectful. People see this as some war where people get hit and die painlessly, then there bodies fade away to prevent people from becoming too upset - now go shoot some bastard Nazi's! That certainly wasn't how it was and makes it look like the men went through less than they did, in addition to being historically wrong.

Only feeling I had with Savage was clicking like a maniac on your mouse and hoping you would hit something while you're running through the field like an idiot.
I only played the beta test though, maybe it changed.
