'Sup, here's my list:

- I am really diggin' Banjo & Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts (Xbox360) at the moment. The whole fiddling with different parts and finally making a vehicle that works how you want it to is really rewarding.
Also the game looks gorgeous.

- Mischief Makers (Nintento64) is my favorite game of all time, yet almost no one else i know seemed to like it :-(
It was different, yes, but i simply loved the puzzle/action platforming gameplay. Also the story was wacky and fun.

- Madworld (Wii). I really liked the feel and the overall tone of the game.
The look however was probably what turned off most people. Personally, i really enjoyed myself playing it.

So how about you guys?
Post some games and some reasons as to why you find them great even though they didn't get the attention they deserved.

I'd probably go with Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles (Gamecube). When 4 friends could get through it together, it was amazing. The only problem I had with it was that me and my best friend were always cool to play it, but we couldn't get 2 other friends to commit like us, so it was kinda unbalanced and incredibly difficult as a result. Incredible system though.

I'd also go for Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (PC). I dunno how popular it actually was, but it had a pretty flawless first-person combat system. I thoroughly enjoyed it, even with the bugs.

ARMA 2 - The most immersive multiplayer shooter experience you'll ever have. I've talked about this game enough on this forum.

7.62 High Calibre - Think Jagged Alliance but with a brilliant hybrid realtime game mechanic allowing you to have non-turned based action yet all the time in the world to plan every step. Combine this with all the details of realistically loading/cleaning/firing guns (if you think STALKER is complex...) with one of the largest weapon selections in any game, and you've got a tactical firearms combat wet dream. The only flaw is its lack of budget and thus bugs are abound. It's still worth your while though, especially if you're the kind of guy who can appreciate core gameplay elements despite minor flaws.

Greed Corp. - Excellent turn based strategy. The game is very simple on the surface, there aren't a ton of unit types or building types or things you can do, but the complexity in strategy becomes apparent the first time you play and are down to 4 remaining tiles and every single action you take must be thought through. Few games have made me bite my nails this much.

Eschalon (especially Book II) - A call back to the old school D&D style isometric RPGs. Rendered in beautiful modern 2d graphics and a great soundtrack, the gameplay depth could not be presented in a better way. You can not afford to pass this game up if you are any kind of RPG or D&D fan. Go buy Book II on Steam right now.

Battlezone - This was a damn classic FPS/RTS hybrid which you don't hear much about any more. The UI was amazingly slick to use on the whole allowing simple base building even when you were taking part in **** off tack battles miles away from home. It was in space for crying out loud!

You got me excited there... ;(

Looks like crap! Maybe if it was like 5 dollars, but 25? Really? For that? What?

On that note, the two Icewind Dale games have always seemed underrated to me. They tend to get overshadowed by Baldur's Gate series. Great combat and music and really not a bad story (****ing awesome by today's standards). They just don't have the flavor of premade party members and just plain not as much dialog overall.

Blacksite Area 51

tried it and loved it, I have no clue why people hated it. Some I asked said they didn't like it, and I asked if they even played the game and they said no. Its like of those games where people jumped on the bandwagon without even giving it a whirl. and to be honest was a much better game than Resistance 1

Really? Haven't got a PS3 but i've tried Resistance 1 a long time ago and liked it quite a bit. If Blacksite Area 51 is just anywhere near that then i'm definately gonna check it out. I really need to play a new shooter and i'm not gonna spend a trillion buying Crysis 2 or whatever new stuff is out now. Thanks for the suggestion!

The graphics, I'm sure.

They're not top of the line, but they're certainly not ugly. They're not bad enough that it would turn him off to the game entirely. Unless he cares THAT much about graphics, in which case he is a poopy face who obviously doesn't appreciate games for the gameplay, which is like, what this thread is completely about.

the game is cheap and you fight aliens. I thought it was much more engaging than Resistance 1 and seemed to have more variety and not seem to stale but give it a whirl

to me it was more colorful too than Resistance

Really, guys? Really? How long have I posted here? And you still think I dismiss a game just because of its graphics? I'm grossly offended!

But yeah it's the graphics. And the 'gameplay' video shows a party of one wizard/whatever the hell, what, clicking on a wolf to attack? Shit blew my mind man. 25 dollars for a free internet flash game... I mean... 25 dollar under-appreciated RPG, with wolf-clicking, and the word GENERIC slathered over every blocky inch of its glorious, under-appreciated self.

As for another -truly- under-appreciated game, I nominate Legend of Mana. Ya, that retarded brother of Secret of Mana that was on the Playstation. Only not retarded! Truly a unique game. It's really just a collection of short stories rather than a giant epic one, but many of them are told in such a sweet way that it warms the heart. Plus there's a ton of stuff to do, like building your own robot, raising pets, forging your own items... all done simply enough that participating in them doesn't detract at all from the main bits. Plus, it's a good one to play late at night; I don't know why.

But don't take it from ME, who only cares about ****ing GRAPHICS. Find a copy for your damn self and enjoy it!

Alpha Protocol definitely didn't get what it deserved. But it's its own fault for being so unpolished. Resonance of Fate, too.

And, ugh, Eschalon looks like DnD only with the fun taken out.

^ Sweet jesus, turn down your volume before you start that video. :|

Shadow of Destiny

and you already mentioned mischief makers, so no need

also Giants: Citizen Kabuto, if you didn't play Giants - you're an asshole

@OP I like you, and you're a Dane. +1

+1 to Flatout 2. I've completed that game so many times. I'm not really into online play, but offline is awesome.

I remember lanning it with my brother, just driving into each other really fast to see how far the ragdoll would fly.

Then I'm an asshole.

Also, I'm Swedish, how many +numbers do I get?

Anyway, underappreciated games.

The Clue!/The Sting! - Absolutely unique titles that has the player recruit partners, buy equipment, car etc and finally plan and execute heists and burglaries. Never ever found any other games that follows this concept. The only upcoming title I can think of that comes close to it is Subversion from Introversion!

Omikron: The Nomad Soul - Maybe it isn't all that underappreciated but god-damnit more people need to play this game and help encourage a sequel being made, can you imagine Omikron running on modern platforms?

Denmark is almost entirely wind powered, so they get a lot of +'s

You're Garg though, so you get +9000!!!

Danish people also talk like they have sausages in their mouth 24/7, so they get a lot of -'s!

Another underappreciated game.

Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels - I loved this on the PS1 and I want a new god-damned squad-based Space Hulk FPS!

Eschalon (especially Book II) - A call back to the old school D&D style isometric RPGs. Yes, the game looks very good. Nice 2d graphics and a true old-school feeling. As for gameplay, I stay by your word. I'll give it a try.

Sacrifice.

I also feel kind of like saying Brothers in Arms - not that it's been under-appreciated, exactly, but I just don't think it's cited as often as it deserves as a very worthy alternative to the WW2 based CoD games.

Battlezone - This was a damn classic FPS/RTS hybrid which you don't hear much about any more. The UI was amazingly slick to use on the whole allowing simple base building even when you were taking part in **** off tack battles miles away from home. It was in space for crying out loud!

I'll agree with you there. That was a hell of a game, although very difficult single player. I still remember that farting sound it would make whn you loaded the game. I used to play it all the time on Heat.net.

I think 10six was a really underappreciated game. The concepts behind it were really great but the execution was flawed. Too bad no one will remember it most likely.

Another is Giants: Citizen Kabuto. Someone put a lot of creative thought and design into that game but it never took off. I don't think there's been a game since that so seamlessly captured the massive variance in scale between factions.

Omikron: The Nomad Soul - Maybe it isn't all that underappreciated but god-damnit more people need to play this game and help encourage a sequel being made, can you imagine Omikron running on modern platforms?

Why have i never seen this game until now? Looks sorta interesting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcmpW89F2vk

Oh and your're swedish? Then i like totally hate you...
Truth is, I think most male danes hate on swedish people because we're envious of your looks.
You're taking our women dammit! :p

Oh almost forgot the Legacy of Kain games, those were so sweet and only one of my friends knew what the hell I was talking about when I said they were a blast. They were just ahead of their time is all

Oh man, I remember replaying the demo of Legacy of Kain on a Official Playstation Magazine disc over and over when I was a kid, never actually bothered getting the full version of any of those titles.

I did have the first original Blood Omen for PS1 though, still do somewhere around here.

That's funny, because i just talked about the Legacy of Kain games with my very good friend about a week ago.
She claims to be a knowitall when it comes to good games, and especially platformers and horror games.
However for some reason she didn't know about Legacy of Kain - wut?
I showed her the first game at my place on my old phat PS1.
She thought it was so awesome that i totally got laid that night.

True story bro.

Nice try, but that's a load of horseshit.

Women don't know games.

Not to mention that I doubt there's any person out there that know it all when it comes to good games.

And in my experience, people making such claims are usually arrogant elitist assholes that just feel the need to try to make themselves seem special to justify their existence!

Yeah, they're almost as bad as those people who don't know it all when it comes to good games.

dammit i want so badly to play omikron, but apparently my ati hd5xxx (and hd ati cards in general) lacks support for 16-bit z-buffer...so i can only manage this:

and there's no fix, aside from changing video cards, according to the interwebbings.

technology!

You know what the best thing about Omikron was? Bowie was in it.

Here's a really underappreciated one: The Unholy War. I have never seen this game talked about anywhere outside of youtube comments. But it's a wonderful game, a combination of a turn-based strategy mode with frenetic, fast-paced combat that had surprising depth.
