Most underappreciated games

That looks really cool. It's like the Micro Machines game, but with planes and online multiplayer.

I played a game similar to that on the Dreamcast once, I seem to recall.

I was a big fan of German developer Blue Byte, partly because I didn't know any better, or know any other developers, but partly because they made pretty decent games. It'd be inaccurate to suggest the Settlers series is 'underappreciated', because Germany seems to exist solely to perpetuate a series that the American market never warmed to and even the British market gave up on eventually (still love the early games though. They take so long, but that's part of the joy).

One of the coolest games they made had to be Archimedean Dynasty. At any rate, it made me that little bit underwhelmed when Bioshock turned up underwater, just felt that little bit less 'unique' for me. Oh sure, the underwater world of AD had a mountain of cliches (the main character is called 'Emerald 'Deadeye' Flint' for ****'s sake), mediocre dialogue, questionable voice acting and other such hang-ups not at all uncommon in mid-90s Space sims, but it was the first time I sat down with a game and felt that someone had put a lot of thought into the world. Of course, this was back in the day of massive manuals, when the entire 600 year future fiction of humanity fleeing under the sea could be told in a whatever page document, but there was a buttload of story in the game too.

Of course, I was a lot more forgiving of clunky gameplay and I have simply never played many space sims. I've never got to the bottom of whether 'Aquanox' was really an inferior sequel, or whether it was just the same shit on a different day.
You know what the best thing about Omikron was? Bowie was in it.
Dude, the best thing about life is that Bowie is in it.

I'm going to second/third/fourth the Legacy of Kain / Soul Reaver games. That entire series was just amazing.

Sumotori.

When I played that, the second game I did I sat there laughing for ten minutes while they flailed all over the place until finally they went off the edge of the map. Jesus christ that is the most hilarious game

Oh man, well theres COC Dark Corners of the Earth, Soul Reaver sort of( game was heavily underdeveloped). Going down my list Parasite Eve simply for being a good jrpg, Planescape Torment definitely, Obscure 2, Beyond Good and Evil

Oh the CoC FPS is definitely underrated, real shame the planned sequel never materialized.

Do cult classics really count as underappreciated?

Let's not get into a debate about the semantics of the word, or underappreciated vs. underplayed vs. undiscovered etc.

I haven't tried Demon's Souls out of fear of difficulty raping me in the buttocks.

Also, pvtbones, X-COM = Underrated? Really?:p

dwarf fortress
Speaking of which, Toady's been developing randomly-generated cities for adventure mode! Yay!

The game will make hundreds of these for each map. So far the buildings are just placeholders, but eventually they'll be proper establishments. Full of citizens and pets. You'll be able to visit them. And buy them. And burn them to the ground if you so wish. Or amass an army of men and attack the castle. How else to get you people interested in this game, I don't know.

The cities more or less show up in tiles now, and I've been fiddling with storm sewers under the paved roads for the last few days. They should be entertaining adventure environments, especially if the people forget to grate off the outflow and critters get in from the river.

With the construction of sewers drawing to an end comes the beginnings of catacombs. These will twist and turn and mix with other underground structures creating fertile ground for quests and adventuring. We are also going to take some time to include some of the undead types we didn't have time for last fall. Prepare to meet the walking dead, both in adventure and fortress modes. The rest of the features (markets etc.) should be put into place shortly afterward.
SERIOUSLY PEOPLE. MOTHER****ING ARMIES OF LIZARDMEN CRAWLING OUT OF THE SEWERS AND ATTACKING YOUR TOWN.

I actually played games by Toady before DF was ever announced or in development!*Brags*

Liberal Crime Squad remains one of my favourite freeware titles!

Also, yes, new updates are looking awesome and I am really excited for the expansion of adventure mode, I really want crafting and such to be implemented in adventure soon, then I can play DF adventure instead of UnReal World.:p

COC the game doesnt really have a cult though, the books do but probably not the game. Parasite Eve probably does along with Soul Reaver.

Theyre also not bad or campy so I would say under-appreciated. COC does have a shit ton of problems though, my favorite being the copy released through steam has the same damn game breaking bug involving a ships cannon that its had since launch. This bug apparently happens to all but the really old graphics cards with xp running, making it not a minor glitch. So **** you whatever mega publisher owns the rights to this and released it like this AGAIN

It looked like it was doing everything to be like Resident Evil 4 except kissing on the mouth so maybe its not a HUGE loss

Wasn't referring to your post in particular. I just don't see how games like Planescape, Heart of Darkness, X-COM or Freelancer could be considered underappreciated. They all have dedicated followings, were very popular around the time they were released and are recognised for their quality and influence quite widely. Not exactly 'hidden gems'.
