I'm not really an expert with hardware.. so..

I was thinking of getting a faster processor at some point, how can I find out what kind of and how good processors my mobo supports?

If its a Pentium precessor you have.. i would tip that you should be able to buy a processor thats Max 250Mhz faster... But it depends how good your cooling is... If its a AMD proc, i would tip you could buy a proc thats 300Mhz faster... If you want to go any higher than that you will either have to buy some more fans to cool or a new Mobo...

That makes no sense......

okay... why ? i know its not a very exact number... but i just take it out from how it's in the most cases...

Its not that simple......if he has an amd mobo that only supports up to 1.3ghz athlon.........he cant use an XP

if he has an intel mobo that only supports 400mhz FSb....he cant use 533 or 800mhz fsb chips.....not to mention differant socket types.

You cant simply say that an intel should be this much faster and an amd should be that much faster.

Its not that simple.

P4 1.6 Ghz.. 400FSB I think, but I'm not sure about that. So, does that mean I can use any other processor with the same FSB?

pretty mcuh. check the make of your mobo with SiSandra (google it) and look up your mobo on the manufactuers site.

The maximum FSB speed seems to be at 400.. so the best processor would be about 2.4ghz..

Okay, thanks for the help

Ditch the Pentiums, there just expensive in power terms. An Asus A7N8X Deluxe with an XP 2600+ would be powerful enough and also allow enough savings to put towards a great gfx card like a 9800np. The Asus board also has great 5.1 sound (soundstorm chip from Xbox), Raid Nforce2 and Firewire. Bargain

I would agree, but he already has a motherboard and is a rookie at this stuff, so a processor upgrade alone is probably the best option for now.

His mobo sounds old though, if he stick another p4 in it he'll be limited to what he can get that'll work. No point sweeping problems under the carpet, invest in a new mobo and CPU. His AGP slot is probably not up to todays standards either. The mobo is the important part of your machine it dictates what all the other part must be. Shite Mobo = Shite Components. A local shop would upgrade the two for an hours charge, maybe £60.
