Motion Blur coming in the future?

In the strider beam effect. this is very cool technology.

No. The 'warping' caused by the strider's beam weapon is a pixel shader. That's not motion blur. According to Valve, motion blur is not even in the Source engine yet.

A great example of motion blur is in Need for Speed Underground. Check out some of the new movies they have out, when they hit the nitrous it gives you an amazing sense of speed.

DTM race driver has pretty nice blurring.

But that email someone sent about that motion blurring, it didn't sound like a confirmation, more like a 'if we add it you'll get it for free' and you talked about motion blurring only in screenshot capping to add to the action moments in screenshots, not in realtime. So there is in my eyes no real confirmation it will be added.
The guy never said anything about realtime motion blurring.

motion blur looks crappy so i disabled it in all games. gta 3 etc.

Sigh, I give up. Believe whatever BS you want.

Or you could actually READ about DX9 features, and 'discover' that motion blur is one of them.

"metal gear solid had motion blur, therefore DX9 CAN'T have motion blur"?!? WTF kind of logic is that?

Anything can have motion blur if the developers code it that way. Anything can be coded in software. All DX 9's motion blur is is a hardware motion blur.

Remember, all hardware offers us is speed.

FFS. Direct X9 HAS MUCH BETTER motion blur than anything that's ever been done as of late. The motion blur in GTA3 and MGS are NOTHING compared to the effect Direct X9 is capable of.

I'm not saying it hasn't. But the only reason it's better is cause of hardware support. Then again thats the way with most things. The motion blur in GTA was crap. But probably the best that could be achieved at acceptable frame rates without support.

Sorry if I got you annoyed. Didn't mean to.

What the hell? Since when is motion blur a DX9 "feature"? I've never seen anything about a new feature in the SDK. Can you give a link?

I don't know why everyone is getting all excited and treating this like some cool new thing... Motion blur has been possible in one form or another for ages, by many different techniques. Pixel shaders let you do some nice stuff with it and offload it onto the GPU instead of the CPU, that's all. It's nothing you can't do with render to texture and the CPU.

Plus, Valve has said you can do vertex and pixel shaders in the SDK, haven't they? So someone could implement this themselves as soon as it's released...

What I would REALLY like to see Valve work on is some cool depth of field stuff.

Thanks, that demo is the bomb... I hope HL2 has light maps with dynamic brightness like that

Lightmaps don't work like that... the lighting in that demo is done from an HDR environment image. They could make lightmaps somewhat dynamic, but it wouldn't be anything like that... HL2 does do some nice lighting stuff on models with HDR, though.

anyone played raven shield?!?! it had some sweet effects like that.

like stale screen imposing with flash bangs, and trails like mad with tear gas

Half-Life and the Source engine will get updated and added to long after the release of HL2. They'll release patches on Steam to include things like motion blur, 256mb GFX card high-res patches, unlock new DX9 features, work out how to do DX9 features on DX8 cards etc. etc.

They will be able to recreate dx9 features in dx 8, 8.1 cards? like what ones, and how close will they be?

motion blur in the past hasn't looked that great because they either weren't done very well or did not fit the look of the rest of the game. With HDR lighting and everything in HL2, motion blur would look pretty sweet... one step closer towards photorealism.

OMFG!!! Another fellow RvS player!!! Ravenshield is teh leet!!

anyway, doesn't the Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy demo use motion blur to some extent with the lightsabers and force powers??

no thats trails on the lightsabers. I think force speed might have though.

The motion blur in gta 3 made me want to ejacualte in my own face.

If motion blur is what I think it is then it looked too weird in GTA3 they should have toned it down, ... hmm I guess even Windows95 had motion blur when u put on the mouse tail? and the old laptop screens had build in motion blur when something was moving ;o))

Do I get it?

I would like it if they had a DOF effect like in Zelda: windwaker. Stuff that's far away is blurry, like in real life, and gets sharp as you get closer.
