The MPAA put out a press release saying they are suing several torrent and eDonkey sites. is0hunt, torrentspy, and ed2k-it were named in particular.
Now, while I understand the motivations of the MPAA and the fact that they are acting on behalf of many major motion picture companies, this isn;t the way they should be going about all of this. Piracy is an unavoidable problem that needs to be dealt with by working with and around the pirates, not working against them. By striking out at piracy they are merely making themselves more of a target.
Honestly, though, even though the movie industry supposedly lost $5.4 billion last year (only $1.9 billion of which is attributed to internet piracy) I have to wonder how much they made. It certainly seems like a very small dent in the industry. Also, I don;t really see anyone in the business starving, especially not the stars, directors, producers, and studio owners. If people doing the actual labor are losing money, they should look to their higher-ups first before looking at pirates. It sickens me that stars constantly seek higher payments for movies when there are plenty of people in the business not earning nearly as much.
I think the MPAA is severely misguided in this affair and if they're smart they won;t sue the torrent and ed2k sites. That's my opinion anyways. What do all of you think?
