As you may be aware there was a transcript of an email from Chris Newcombe sent to another valve employee posted on a website that shall remain nameless. I’m not sure how the people hosting this transcript got hold of the email but they say they intercepted it. I did not leak this information at all and I did not have access to this email Chris sent.

I did indeed talk to Chris on Steam using an account registered to Doug Lombardi but this transcript has been edited. I can’t say who done it and I don’t know why, but some of the questions and answers have been mixed around and is different from my original chat.

I spoke to Chris that day to point him to a forum thread titled ‘Beware who you talk to’. The thread talks about a thread I posted in the Steam forum that was ignored. I spoke of the lack of security on Steam and that anyone can impersonate people by using their name and email address without verification. I also stated I was successfully able to create an account with Doug Lombardi’s details. I decided to use the Doug Lombardi account to speak to Chris and show the seriousness of the matter. At no point did I say I was Doug or attempt to impersonate him to gain information.

Unfortunately Chris didn’t read the whole thread and mistaking me for Doug, told me some information he shouldn’t have. After asking a couple of questions he realized I wasn’t Doug and asked me to keep the information quiet which I have done.

A lot of people think I was out to gain information by tricking Chris which simply isn’t true. Unfortunately they don’t know what happened, only me and Chris.

I would appreciate it if the chat log was kept off these forums. It is confidential information and I will continue to try to keep it that way as I promised.

I say again, it wasn't any kind of 'social engineering' :(
I didn't even know the meaning of the word until this week.

I have no idea what's going on....?

Don't worry about it then :)

Heres hoping they will get wiped out bacuse of all of this. :bounce:

Amen.

@ munro: I don't think anyone thinks you tried to impersonate Doug. Have you had any indications that you are a suspect in all this?

The purpose of "The Clan" publishing that particular letter (when they have probably intercepted many other ones) might have been to incriminate you in the eyes of Valve/FBI. Hopefully this didn't succeed.

I posted after a few people on gameshout.net decided to say a load of rubbish about me. I know it's not true, as does Valve.

What clan? Can I join? :p

No seriously, who are "The Clan"?

nah, they just like causing trouble. Its their reason for existance.

Ahh...
So what exactly has "The Clan" done?

if you just go read the forums at halflifesource.com you'll find that they are quite uninformed

it's plainly obvious :\

not to mention the number of big time news sites that have deemed hl2.net a good enough source to use for national news.

like msnbc, the bbc, wired.
but i guess that's not enough for halflifesource.com :\

from their front page:
There is a lot of talk going around in the community about how the Half-Life 2 Source was leaked. Please keep in mind that Gabe Newell has NOT revealed all the facts. We do NOT know what really happened. So please, do NOT believe anything you read until we talk with Gabe Newell face to face.

i'll laugh when they post the "so i guess it was real" news or have gabe on their radio broadcast saying "yeah, my hl2.net post was real"

oops i meant .com :p you quoted me before i could edit

but honestly, the average headcrab poster on this forum knows more than andy hodges. during his radio broadcasts, he asks questions of the guests (who are similarly clueless) that you could find out in 10 seconds by using the search function of these boards.

i really hope they get gabe on their radio...besides the fact that i'd like to hear him answer questions live, they'd sound even more like morons with the only guy that knows everything about hl2 and the whole situation sitting there face to face with them.

I'm just too quick for you, padawan.

... "DRAW!"

thats a pretty bad anaology, what do you mean by faking out a pizza place?

I read that log actually heh, I started to have my doubts about you.. :p

but, anyway /me hugs munro
poor little chap being framed like that.

Not to mention that their website is ugly.

Seriously, I saw "that groups" post of the email on their site and wondered what was going on. It's good to know that munro isn't as underhanded as they made him out to be. The situation is "interesting" nonetheless.

I think I know what it is that Munro is supposed to be keeping quiet about. Am I right in saying that in the supposed intercepted email from Chris N at Valve with the Munro/Doug/Chris N Steam chatlog contains the information that you're supposed to be keeping quiet about, or has all the information in the chat log been manufactured?

Yes the information is real the log was just muddled up.

Maskirovka - was that meant to be in another thread?

I think it was "intecepted" and posted on websites because it was there chance to get back at you Munro as you cant deny you did impersonate Doug, but not to anything malicious. Thanks for clearing it up though!
