Not something the community has talked about that much.
Will there be any at all, and if there is, what kind?
edit:what would you put in?

Watch the videos, there's plenty of music to consume from them. And yes, you can turn it off if you don't like it. :p I personally love the music, but not everyone shares that opinion.

yes there will be music, there is some in the binks and in the Gold Package on Steam, there is HL2's soundtrack

There'll be lots of kickass music, yes. I love it, Kelly Bailey's a genius.

Well, what would You put in there if you made it?
Rammstien for me...

All the music will be composed by Valve's Kelly Bailey. We'd have heard some of the music in the BINK videos and I imagine it will be a similar style to the music in HL.

thx for the info on kelly bailey

If you need a general picture on what the music is gonna be like, watch the Coast bink if you can.

The music is dynamicaly seeded. Ie if there is a big monster round the next corner it will get all tense and the minute you see it the drums will kick in as you run like hell in the other direction. Would be kind of use full in real life to warn you that your boss is......

I liked the music in the Barricade vid, it just seemed to suit the occasion.

Saying that, i prefer classical music in games with huge firefights, it makes the player feel godlike. None of that techno crap. But the way HL (and hopefully HL2) do it is great.

Looking forward to the music in it.

HL2 will be primarily techno-type music. It just seems appropriate to the European setting and the general sci-fi/dystopian future theme.

Classical music is best for World War 2 games or RTS games.

I heard a rumour that Roxette were doing the music for HL2.

I heard the soundtrack would be:

Roxette
Abba
Europe (remember "The Final Countdown"?)
Zlad

Watch the Coast and Barricade Binks and listen to those tracks. The music in HL2 is really, really well done. Those two alone convinced me to get the Gold pack for the soundtrack CD.

They should use some heavy metal in the game. That works well with violence :)

edit: yay! my 900th post!

Actually, I did the music for Half-Life 2.

I saw it as THE opportunity to pursue my great musical vision -- to create the ultimate hybrid of Styx, Led Zeppelin, and Tears for Fears. It will be a staggeringly powerful combination of power pop, heavy metal and synthesizers. It took me a long time to find enough guys with really high voices for the choral passages, but I finally struck gold in northern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Recording was great, and Gabe loved the results.

I'm really looking forward to everybody's reactions. I think it'll put the Dune 2000 soundtrack, currently the gold standard in video game music, to utter and crippling shame.

Ew heavy metal no. I lovee metal (opeth, etc) but metal for games is sooo ID SOFTWARE :/

I'm not crazy about the drum and bassy coast music but I'll take it over metal in a game any day. I love the barricade music
