I think they just ran out of decent material that fits within the context of the program. Which is why the outrageous stuff that they come up with nowday's is often so out of place it just makes you go.. wtf? along with the occassional giggle.

This was a fairly old episode. Well not the beginning ones but not to the point where most people think the simpsons started sucking badly- this was from the good ages.
