MUST ... KILL ... REDCOATS!! aka The very unofficial Empire: Total War thread

I can't make up my mind if the game's worth it or not. I'm a TW fan, owning Rome and Medieval 2, but the era of Empire doesn't interest me in the slightest and there are many massive mods for the earlier games. Most of the mods are about the parts of history I'm very fond of, and they are constantly being improved and polished.

If Empire was vastly superior gameplay-wise, those points wouldn't matter as much but I've read that the campaign map AI is still, after all these games incapable of good strategy and diplomacy. I might give the game a shot after the initial problems are patched but at the moment I'll just watch how things develop.

If you are not fond of the time period then i advise not to get it, its not really that good imo.

I'd wait till they've released a few patches before you buy. It's the Total War way I guess. It took them about three patches just to get the cavalry charges working properly (sort of) in M2.

In Empire, the diplomacy AI can be annoying (constantly offering the same deal turn after turn, won't accept five techs for a crappy one of theirs), but it's a million times better that what you get in Rome and Medieval 2. In those games there was really absolutely no point to it other than trade rights. The rest of it was worthless. That said, Empire's largely broken at the moment. The campaign AI can't even launch seabourne invasions, it doesn't know how to ferry troops about in ships. So if you're playing as Britain, there really is absolutely no threat whatsoever to your homeland. And if a faction produces armies on an island somewhere, it has absolutely no way to transport them - you end up seeing two or three full stacks stranded on some random Carribean island. Not to mention sound and animation glitches, and people are having problems with CTDs.

Basically all the best times I've had playing TW games were with mods. Rome had Rome Total Realism, SPQR and Europa Barbarorum, and I didn't even like Med2 until I played Stainless Steel. So yeah, I'd wait a few months at least.

Going to install it right now, haven't been able to play. Going to play as Spain, like in M2:TW.

NO ONE EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION!

And then slowly have their empire crumble and their misuse of words like "crisp" and "chips" and "biscuit" mocked!

Muahaha!

Actually it's you lot who get the piss took out of you for misuse of such words' as has been said we were here long before you was so our English is the correct English.

If you don't mind living in the stone ages, buuuuuddy!

Playing as Prussia, since colonies piss me off.
I took Iceland. Yay.

I suspect sarcasm was afoot. And er... it's 'taken', not 'took', 'were', not 'was'. Sarcasm and Irony in one post, my day is made.

Going to leave it for a while before I buy like Jimmeh said, I remember the last TW and the infamous cavalry charge bug... takes them a while but Creative Assembly have always been good with patches.

Just completed the grand campagin with the Marathas Confederacy and I'm pretty impressed. Theres quite a few niggles though, like the AI not being able to transport troops via ship and such.

Does anyone know if its possible to open up the minor factions for skirmish play?

You can open up the minor factions for the campaign too... google 'empire total war faction unlocker'.
