Okay, this isnt a loyalist rant...aka a fanboy rant.

I am going to be seriously pissed if MW2 gets GOTY.

I can see it now. Yes, MW2 will undoubtedly break entertainment sales records tomorrow morning. But I can predict this being the ONLY reason why MW2 will muscle its way into its undeserving GOTY position.

Because of this, games that actually deserve the title like Uncharted 2 will be shrugged aside and given a 2nd or 3rd place. Games that actually created innovation and gave us something new like Batman Arkham Asylum and Uncharted 2.

Personally, Uncharted 2 should be high and dry above MW2 when it comes to whoever it is that decides which game gets GOTY.

For those of us that have played Uncharted 2, we know how ridiculously brilliant this game is, and how it will remain as a constant treasure on our shelves and give us a smile everytime we even think about the title alone, let alone the characters and constant supply of memorable moments.

For those that havent played Uncharted 2, youll never know what we're on about until you try it for yourselves. Uncharted 2 does something that literally no other game could even come close to. Its in the script and the characters, you feel a connection that cannot be matched by any other game, and yes, that includes the Half-Lifes.

It just infuriates me that MW2 will get GOTY simply because of sale numbers and people spending every waking hour increasing their ego by sitting online and breaking record numbers.

MW2 will just shove aside every other game that actually deserves the title of GOTY, and god damn it that annoys me.

Sounds like fanboy crying, but it isnt. Its a rant at MW2. Yes I love Uncharted 2, but I know I'll become a complete fanboy of Assassins Creed 2 when it comes out next week. AC2 is the first game ive ever pre-ordered a special edition for. But I still know, deep down, that Uncharted 2 will remain as the best game ive ever played, I completely fell in love with it...and Nathan Drake, but then who hasnt?

Yes I have pre-ordered MW2. I have every intention of playing and enjoying it, but I just know itll be MW with a different setting and bigger set-pieces...considering its been built on pretty much the old MW engine, so im not expecting anything new to appear apart from new weapons and enemies.

Which is HONESTLY more worthy of such a title?

I also have a sneaky suspicion that Fifa 10 may sneak into the spot...so im not just pegging the title at just Uncharted 2 and MW2.

Doesn't every single magazine have their own GOTY? I really don't understand how this works. Who are you listening to? I'm just curious.

True. Im mainly referring to the Golden Joystick Awards and alike. Any awards where their results get released on the net, TV etc.

Like MW could tag itself with 'GOTY 2008', based on what? One award? All the magazines awards and taken an average position?

Game awards are a retarded idea, since every magazine and their moms have one.

People put too much weight on what is and is not GOTY material, how many stars a game has, what it's metascore is, whether or not it gets a 10/10. If the game is considered to be good, the reviews are positive and the genre appeals to it then the game is probably going to be worth your money (if the price is right, of course).

That being said, the vast majority of us don't have access to this game yet, so we can't really hold a valid opinion. If it exceeds all expectations, which seem to be pretty bloody high for most people, then perhaps it does deserve the occasional GOTY. I do agree with you though, the hype will probably have every (non-PC) gamer playing with rose tinted glasses and could steal the awards away from more deserving and certainly more original titles.

PS: You have actually seen some of the trailers and previews for this game, correct? I think there may be a bit more to this game over its predecessor than new weapons and enemies.

Well thats just the thing.

Its the fact that the game isnt even out yet and theyre practically chipping 'Modern Warfare 2' into every GOTY trophy already.

This is whats annoying me.

Well, that's hype for you. It's not without precedent, I'm sure the vast majority of people on this forum would have had similar feelings to Half-Life 2 prior to its release. That was 'us', this is 'their' equivalent. Like Half-Life 2, this game's enourmous popularity is almost entirely based on the reputation of the game that came before it, and what we have seen from the videos. What remains to be seen is how good the game actually is, and I doubt it will deserve the same acolades that Half-Life 2 got and the better reviewers will see that if it is true.

Dynasty do you have FIFA 10? PLAY WITH ME ONLINE BRAH!

Uncharted 2 is the best game this year.

also if you guys have FIFA10 on the xbox 360, add me: DigiQ8

Yeah, I don't think that these awards or any awards actually mean anything. The only awards that would matter in any tangible way would be the ones that offer some sort of financial compensation for the win. Otherwise, has enough research been done on whether or not these "GOTY" epithets actually make a difference in terms of increased sales? You can throw it on a box, but do people actually care? Do you guys care? I think the only folks that REALLY care are the fanboys.

I enjoy following awards, if anything to highlight games I havent picked up (ie. Mass Effect was one I didnt play until June this year), but that being said there are plenty of games out there that I personally love but wont get game of the year for popularity reasons, or because they didnt score as high (Shattered Horizon, Borderlands, X3: Terran Conflict, Empire: Total War).

VictimOfScience, "GAME OF THE YEAR" written on a game box is certainly a distinction to have, when shelves are lined with dozens of games. This is especially true if the award was earned from reputable or popular media.

I think youre right.

Didnt MW get Game Of The Year written on the box? Or even if it was a plastic sticker or something, I guarantee Activision saw a spike in sales as a result.

I think Dragon Age: Origins is a serious GOTY contender.
MW2 will probably win the award in the FPS category, no doubts about it.

Im still amazed that the big fish reviewers online havent posted their reviews yet, and its out tomorrow.

Whats the point in adding your review at 00:01 hours on the day the game is out? I mean seriously.

Theyve probably been instructed by Activision but...its maddening.

99.9% of reviews come out BEFORE the release date, so you can make an informed decision about your pre-order or purchase.

'I know, lets release the reviews the morning of release, so anyone who has shipments coming will get the game regardless of whether the review changed their mind or not'.

'I know, lets release the reviews the morning of release, so anyone who has shipments coming will get the game regardless of whether the review changed their mind or not'.

Thats exactly why. Activision probably hasnt given out any copies because they know at this point reviews can only hurt their sales. The hype for the game now is ridiculous, and they can ride that wave selling millions, even without good reviews or any reviews at all. People will see no reviews and say "whatever, ill just get it."

They do the same thing with movies. If they know its super hyped, but going to be shittier than expected, they wont let anyone review it until they've released it. That way people will go see it because they aren't informed of how shit it is. (Transformers 2 is my main example here)

Funnily enough I was just thinking that.

I guess they can get away with no reviews at all and everyone will buy it. Its not like theres not enough adverts for it out there...

Although come to think of it, I think Ive seen more adverts for AC2 on MSN, Googlemail, even on BBC news websites. Same happened with Uncharted 2.

Brainwashing.

Well you can't blame them, among many of us, even a great review of 8.5/10 means we might not buy it. Especially since many people interested already have the first one, which probably got a better review than 8.5. Then consider that a second game in a series is subject to a harsher review since 1) it's a rehash and 2) it's more dated, especially using the same game engine. 3) problems with the first one may still be present when they are expected to be addressed.

I've not played Uncharted 2, but I disagree with the assessment that Batman Arkham Asylum is innovative. B:AA is a very good game in the sense that it's an extremely high quality product, very polished in its execution and an enjoyable gaming experience whilst it lasts, but I don't think that its necessarily doing anything that goes beyond what other games before it have achieved. It's a fairly linear gaming experience, and there isn't any variety in how you over come obstacles. It's akin to WoW, merely building on the bones of other older games and delivering a smooth gaming experience. That is not in itself a crime (it's to be commended) but it is not innovative in the sense of how Portal was.

Well, even in that case one could argue Narbacular Drop was the backbone design on which Portal was based

Because GOTY awards actually means it was the game of the year

brb, can't have opinions or favorite games because some shitty award was given out.

Either way MW2 will sell like mad and there's nothing a GOTY award will do to change that

Admit it.

Demon's Souls is a great game, but the learning curve of this game plus the insane difficulty pretty much scratches out this game from GOTY contender. But it is a great game nonetheless.

The serious GOTY contenders are Uncharted 2, MW2, and Dragon Age. But I can pretty much guess which game is going to win the award.

As much as I would love to see Uncharted 2 receive as many accolades as possible, I won't disregard MW2's candidacy until I have played the game.

Narbacular Drop was never released as a commercial game.

Does that make a difference? It was still avaliable to the public, and it was let known that Valve aquired the team that made the game for the development of Portal.

Yes, of course it does. If it was released as more than a free download, IE to the extend that it was say an independent game in the mould of Braid, World of Goo or Audiosurf you'd perhaps have a point, but given the vast majority of peoples knowledge of the title occurred after they'd heard about Portal I'd say that claiming it was out there propagating itself on it's own merits is disingenuous.
