i have no idea when or why it happened, but when i played OB the other day it randomly freezed on the menu and will barely run now. the disk has large circular symmetric scratches. i dont have the receipt for the game, but shouldn't i be able to get a new xbox or game from the store i bought the console at, since it's a console issue?

Did you bump it during operation or did it fall?

That will mess it up.

I bet you took a compass to it. :O

you have to send it in
theres some new problem where 360's begin scratching and ruining disks for a reason that I am not sure of,and theres no way to fix it
are you still under warranty?
also,is this happening to other games?

I wish the 360 wasn't so damn fragile and stress inducing.

I bought mine, and I have only brought it over to my cousins when I visit once.

They aren't the most careful, so now I no longer will ever bring it over there. I'm too worried about it overheating, being bumped while in operation, or something ruining it in some other way.

I never had to baby my Xbox as much as I do my xbox 360... and I've done all sorts of stuff to my xbox, including taking it apart and reassembling it dozens of times.

hahaa^^
thats the truth
you may realize that you'll baby your 360 more then you baby a....baby

it stands on it's side, haven't moved it anytime when it's on, it hasnt happened to any other game. warranty is still valid, i got the console less than 2 months ago.

Is there a sticker on the disc? There's been issues with PS2s of putting it on it's side and putting in CD's that had stickers on it, something like ripping the CD apart. I can't remember.

Lay it back down horizontally. I kept mine vertical and it cut up Saints Row and Call of Duty 2.

Doesn't that endanger it of overheating? because the heat resides on a more concentrated plane?

I don't think that really changes anything. I'd say that the heat behaves a bit differently when the system is horizontal - while there's a lot less vertical room for the heat, it gets spread out because of the width and depth of the 360 - but nothing that would cause a difference of more than a degree or two in component temperatures. I'm also under the impression that keeping the 360 vertical puts extra stress on the heatsinks, which just makes the 360 brick itself faster.

The pressure from whatever is holding those heat sinks in place far outweighs the pitiful efforts of gravity when your console sits vertically.

I bumped my 360 like this once when i just got it the game got messed up `gears of war`i couldent play it on its side anymore so i put it down flat an it worked fine.I think they have to replace the disc though and if they dont it would? i would file a class action lawsuit milk them for all there worth theres been a couple lawsuis in the states so if you live there it should be easy :)

Not if it's not on carpet, and it's well-ventilated all over. :)

Also, I'm sure MS realizes how much trouble people have to go to while being carefule with the 360 and will fix it in the next console.

If you want to dare, you can find a guide online where all you need to do is add a rubber pad into the dvd drive and that will stop it from scratching. You need to open it up and do it though so your warranty will be voided.

What do you have to do to have the warranty anyways? Did you have to send a card in? I still have the receipt(hell, I still have the receipt to my computer from 2003, lol), but I never sent anything in. Am I still covered by warranty by default as long as I have the receipt from best buy?

Best buy tried offering me a warranty for it, but wanted like 100 bucks. Like ****ing hell I'm going to pay 100 bucks for a warranty on a 400 dollar product.

Damn, do you guys all live in prison cell sized rooms? My xbox is about 10ft away from me when I play games, it sits vertically, and it has never scratched a disk out of the 30 or so games I own... although, I did experience the RROD :(!

The pressure from whatever is holding those heat sinks in place far outweighs the pitiful efforts of gravity when your console sits vertically.

The problem isn't that the heatsinks are exerting a lot of pressure on the chipsets, it's that the heatsinks are gradually losing their pressure. When the console is horizontal, gravity is pulling the heatsinks against the chipsets, but when it's vertical gravity is pulling perpendicular to them. And since the heatsinks are coming off on their own, having gravity pull on them is only going to make them come off faster. Yes, gravity accounts for not very much force, but over a period of months sitting constantly in that position, it's going to start to make a measurable difference.

If you guys are seriously having problems with heat, buy an intercooler for 25$.
:\
I once moved my xbox while it was going. made a screeching sound and killed my Saint's Row disc and scratched mah Halo 3, so I can't play the last level anymore. :p Then the disc reader died from the gash it made in my SR disc, and I had to replace it. Does anyone know how to open my 360 so I can see what was wrong?

Wtf, are all consoles this fragile? My computer can live with 3 pounds of dust in it, and be positioned vertically, sideways, upsidedown or at a 33 degree tilt and still work.

The 360 has issues with the soldering that holds the GPU's heatsink in place. I'm just trying to explain how keeping the console vertical helps to accelerate the heatsink's detachment process.

ah, mine's on the carpet! Maybe I'll put it on a wooden platform?
