To be a better modeler, spend more than 3 days to make a model. You seem to be already on the right track. :E

to be a better modeler, you need to be able to do that in a few hours

wireframe pic would be nice

A faster modeler doesnt mean a better modeler.

Model quality and the ability to reduce polycounts without any loss in detail is where the true skill has to come into play

true that homie.. and i never modeled much hehe

Modeling speed doesn't matter, IMO. It's the quality of the model that counts, and so far, the model looks great. Everyone has their own pace. :E

Here we go Wireframe

You asked for it you got it heres the wireframe of the berettas

i would have throught the grip is too small. and the clip goes way too far into the gun.

The top of the magazine should be just under the barrel, instead of to the very top of the gun. You also need to make the slide seperate from the barrel itself, and the body of the gun. The hammer is also missing. (Note: The hammer is attached to the body of the gun, and doesn't move back with the slide.) I can see A LOT of places where you can remove some of the polygons making up the curved surfaces, like the trigger guard, the trigger (both should be flat, the guard should be much thinner and maybe have a little curve on the bottom), the bottom of the magazine, among many other parts.

It looks alright, but the model really needs work.

About the model time. Just to make that clear. There are a couple of things that matter. You have to be able to model fast. In a workrelated situation they expect you to do a good model in a short period of time. Models get better the more time you get, but at work you won't have that time :) deadlines.

I think you have a good start. Just keep on modeling and you'll get the hang of it. You also have many years to practice too. It doesn't matter that this model took you this long as long as you learned from it so you do it better and faster in the future.Pick up things that can save you time later. Just enjoy what you are doing and this will work out fine.

im not trying to put u down but the next avenue or aspect u should work on is to go and find refferences and model something without a tutorial
then go and draw up some concept and model ur own gun.
then i guess ypu should move on to organic modeling.

modeling organic subjects i mean
and btw age has nothing to do with ur skill no in the field of art its all about observation.

erm.. *cough*.. wow.. 16 years and you have the money to buy 3dsmax? *cough*

(don't wanna be an asshole here, but it's lame to use pirated software in my opinion.. )

good start though. try to put in a little more detail and then on to texturing.. and blender (www.blender3d.org)

you know thats what we say that its wrong to use pirated software but he is dveloping his skills with it ..its giving him an opertunity to learn something and maybe bring him up to the level where he can buy th software ...as for blender it really sucks ..i know its free but it just doesnt have the things that people need to learn.

just an opinion im not contradicting you but yeah thats th truth ...

ok.. i get your point. of course it's essential to know the "big" software... BUT.. if you say blender sucks, u never really used it. trust me.. i've been using blender for 4 years now.. and it's got the BEST and FASTEST modeller ever seen on this planet. i use it at work as well (i am a media designer).
i know a lot of people who are forced to use 3dsmax/lw/si/whatever.. and guess what they do? they modell in blender and export their models to whatever software they have to use at their job.
blender might have a steep learning curve, but if you get the grips, there is nothing better to modell fast and efficiently.
(just my opinion.. don't wanna start a flame.. hehe)

and to learn 3d modelling it isn't important which software u use as long as it is able to do what it should (i am not talking about bryce or poser or whatever those freaky useless programs are called. *g*)

just my 2 cents. :D

duh.. I know that. I was just surprised that you said he could just go over to organic modeling after completing some more mechanical modeling... Organic is so insanely different...
