Finally got my faithful dot crosshair working in HL2. Unfortunately, I have never worked with true type fonts before so the result was less than stellar. I think HL2 does some blending on the crosshair which can also contribute to it looking a bit off. I removed the brackets with quick info disabled (quick info itself works as normal for those of you who like the feature).
The crosshair looks less atrocious at 1280x1024 or higher. I also made a dot crosshair which is just a single pixel, but it's nigh on impossible to track ingame unless you play with a ridiculously low res (which is made worse by the crosshair's color, which I do not know how to change. Maybe only with the SDK?).
For those interested in doing a less noob job than me: the actual crosshair is in hl2/resources/halflife2.ttf (letter Q). The brackets around the crosshair are defined in hl2crosshairs.ttf. After you edit these files, you must flag them as read-only or hl2 will just overwrite them with the default versions.
Happy .357 headshots!
(Unzip the files to your hl2/resources folder. It's not really necessary to backup the old files, but do it anyway. If you want the old crosshair back, delete both halflife2.ttf and hl2crosshairs.ttf and HL2 will replace them with the original versions.)
