So now that i'm licensed, and my mom is starting to get more and more stubborn with letting me take her CRV out and about, I need to find myself an automobile to call my own.

My only real requirements are that it be a compact truck, reliable, and easily found for under 6000 USD.

I don't intend on taking this mofo offroad at all, other than what it takes to get me and my bike down to the trailheads, so I don't give a shit about 4x4 ofroad packages and shit.

Of course i'd kill for a tacoma, but I'd be a child of god to find a driveable one in my price range.

I hear a tonne of mixed reviews on the S10 and Sonoma, what do you folks think?

Rangers and B series' are a dime a dozen down here, so i'd like to avoid them if at all possible, too easy to find a shitter for 5 thousand...

There are a tonne of old 80-90s Toyota Hillux' / Toyota "trucks" in the area that fit the bill price wise and are VISUALLY just fine, but I don't know what to look for going bad in these trucks, and only have word of mouth and an episode of Top Gear to go on for reliability (and i've heard of some cooling system and gasket issues on some bike forums).

So, considering my requirements, what vehicles could you folks recommend for a cheap ass punk kid like myself? I'm willing to move into the mid sized range of trucks, so long as I can find a V6 model. I'd like to stay the **** away from V8s.

Just use your damn bike. You live in Hawaii for Christ's sakes!

Silly question. :E

I'll probably end up selling the bike to fund the truck, and then use the money from a job i'm currently searching for to fund an RM250.

Arr. That's the wusses way out, man. When you have to stop to wipe the ice off your visor, you know you're a real biker. :smoking:

if you want reliability, get a hilux. The one top gear used was ?1000 ($2000), and they put it in the sea, crashed it into everything that dosen't move out of the way, set it on fire, hit it with a wrecking ball, dropped a caravan on it and then put it on top of a building, which they then blew up. And it was still going. If you want reliability, I say thats where you look.

Why a truck? Do you have a lot of stuff you need to move around regularly?

Trucks... I'd think seriously about the MPG you get with those things before you settle yourself in one.

You want a truck for the sake of having a truck? Oil prices are not going down you know...

*gag at a truck*

But, I hear a ton of good things about S10's.

why would you need a pickup? enjoy paying through the nose for gas

Didn't he say he needs to cart around his dirtbike?

Anyways, I'm now a big fan of Nissan, so I'll put in a good word for the Frontier, even though I have zero experience with pickup trucks.... except that my dad drove a Silverado until my brother made it one with a telephone pole...

he says he's probably going to sell the bike to pay for the pick up

That's not why he wants the truck, surely?

C'mon man, trailering a bike around is for old fat posers on spotless Harley Davidsons with 300 miles on the clock. Doooonnnnn't do it.

There's a reason why all the arab militia use toyota pickups.....

2wd regular cab regular bed ranger gets around 23 mpg :|

Don't know about the Hillux though, i'd imagine that something that old wouldn't be the greatest on gas.

I'd love to just get a used 90s model CRV or Civic or something else cheap and efficient, put a makeshift towhitch on it, and watch my transmission go to hell while I grin ear to ear taking my bike to the trailheads on a tiny 1 bike trailer, but I just don't have the space to store a trailer right now.

And YES, if everything works out PERFECTLY, i'll sell my bike, use the money + a job to fund a truck, use the truck to ditch the bus and get to work, then use the money from work to get a used 04-08 RM250, YZ250, 200EXC, or CR250.

I'll probably end up just working for the truck and keeping the bike until I can sell at a later date though, so repiv, stfu :p

I'm just ribbin' ya. Seriously though, I don't get it - why don't you just use the bike to get to work and cut out the whole middle part of the equation?

But then he's getting another bike....

why not just stick with the bike? as repiv pointed out he lives in hawaii

hey it's your money you can do what you want with it ..I just find that a good slice of pick up owners never use their pick up to actually haul around stuff ...just like suv owners rarely buy them so they can go offroading

Trust me, if I could find a mid to compact sized SUV or sedan that came stock with a tow hitch that was about as reliable as a lead brick and could be found in good condition used for under 5000 USD, I would.

But I can't, so my next option is a truck :/

A 2000 AWD CRV with a tow hitch would be a lovely car for me.

*shrug*

I just stick my work clothes in a tankbag. Summer - perforated race leathers, sport boots and gloves, one-piece rainsuit over the top if it's raining.
Winter - waterproof armoured textiles with extra lining, undergloves, electrical heated grips and hand guards on the bike, balaclava, fleece, windstopper shirt. Does me just fine to temperatures of -5C or so, never get stuck in traffic, and when I get there I have free parking.

Just don't see the point in the truck.
