My dog broke a bird's wing

I heard my dark barking in the backyard and I went to investigate why. I see a couple of birds just flying around where he was and I found him over a bird on its back chirping as if it was in pain. After awhile it stopped chirping, so I thought it was dead. An hour later my brother and I went to go pick up the dead body to find that it was alive. The wing is broken and under the wing there is some bone, I don't know if bird's wings are suppose to look like that or what, and it's also bleeding a tad bit. We put it in a little play house in our backyard and see if we can help it. Does anyone know how to help broken wings? I Googled it but it's mostly pigeons and larger birds I can find. This one is about 3 inches long.

Take the bird to an animal hospital or shelter - they can probably do something for it (a hospital would be better, they're better equipped for wildlife).

There's got to be a vet somewhat close to you. If you can find one, take the bird there and ask them to help you with it. They have to help it, it wouldn't be in good conscience to leave it alone.

If you can not do anything for it, end it suffering, kill it, its a better choice than letting it heal to find out it can't fly anymore and it'll die a slow and painful death, show some mercy and end its life. don't let it suffer.

My advice, get a shoebox, put the bird in it, get a can of deodorant (if you willing to use it up), crack open the box lit, spray a large amount of deodorant in the box, close the lit, if isn't dead, use more, but for Christ sake don't spray directly at the bird, wait until chokes to death and dump it in the bin or bury it in your yard

Vet is closed at night and I don't want to kill it I love animals. We're just going to let it sleep in the little house and see how it's doing tomorrow. If it's fine I'm gonna try and take him to the vet

Agreed, if you love animals but can't go to a vet, this is the best(for the bird) you can do. Don't try healing it yourself, because you can't

In the vast majority of cases killing the bird is the kindest thing to do. And a swift foot to the head usually ensures its quick.

Assuming your an American and therefore your parents have a shit-ton of guns, just shoot it in the head if its suffering and you absolutely refuse to ****ing learn to help it (for a start, internet + google-search = helpful advice).

I am British (aka "no guns please, we're British") and even I have an air rifle which could do the job quickly and without fuss. The boot to the head also works but a bit too blunt for my tastes.


I wouldn't myself though because I would ****ing help the bird, because I have a brain, and I can use it to do better then put it in a playhouse over night to die from exposure.

but, i am the same as you, i wouldn't be able to do that, so take it to the vet and let him deal with it the way he thinks is right. i hate the thought of killing a bird, but if its best...

Thanks for the advice guys, but the bird disappeared. Last night we put it in a show box instead and put it on a stool last night. We come back this morning and find out that it's gone. I don't think I big bird came because there were no feathers or sign of struggling. Either way it's gone, and it gave us a good-bye present...a piece of shit lying right in the box

We found the bird! It was in another section of our backyard...dead. So me and my brother buried it. Poor bird, it must've jumped off of the stool and hurt itself and died in the heat.

lol ..yes they'll do exactly as I suggested..take it out back and snap it's neck. No really do you people honestly believe animal shelters have the resources to save a bird? what are they going to do? put the birds wing in a cast? it will never heal correctly and the bird wont being able to fly making a perfect target for predators. it's essentially dead but it just doesnt know it yet.

dont get me wrong, I'm big on animal welfare but trying to save a sparrow from a broken wing is just unrealistic, they dont have the resorces for that sort of thing. do the humane thing and end it's suffering or care for it till it dies. the humane society will just put it out of it's misery
