Yeah, I know it isn't too complicated, and making simple stuff is the best way to start for a newbie.. and yes, it is just 1 mesh.

Heh I was just expecting to see a rendered tube, hey atleast you put in a joint piece.

In lightwave, it's called 'radiosity' :)

the effect is known as radiosity.. the way surfaces radiate luminosity onto each other, even if very slightly. radi - osity, radiosity

the technique to get the look he's after is called global illumination meaning its lit globally.

Can also be called an accessability map as the same technique is and can be used to get effect as dirt or rust or setting up diffuse maps, or anything really that requires its appearance to depend on what can be accessed easily by illumination from all points around the object. Not to mention handy for lesser shadows to add extra depth and realism. In textures by the way it lights only the accessable to the light parts. Good for extra realism, shame many don't do it/know about it...

or the lighting effect can be faked with the spinning light trick, which incidently only works properly in Lightwave, the results never look too good in others cause of the way LW's motion blur works being different to other programs making spinning lights not as useful in other packages.

Ouch!, ok so I just read that back to myself and I swear on my life its not meant to come across as stuck up like it might sound :(:(

way to many faces, you should be able to do that with under 100

are you sure?.. why don't you do it and show me.

anyways..
i hear 222 faces ( 444 polys ) is a good number for a 3rd person weapon/object..
