My first model...

Hey guys here is a picture of my first model that I made where I wasn't following a tutorial... Now, the texture and rendering and lighting stuff still confuses me but I tried fiddling around with global illumination some and stuff... Well here is the pic criticize me! It is a really simple model too... There is also some weird purple stuff along the upper right corner and I don't know what that is all about..

i still dont understand what the cylinder is :S, is it a silencer or a small piece of hose ??
