Sorry for my poor english, but here it goes:

Well, as I said before, I pre-ordered new Thief game and it came to me today. Yay…

Before I start my first impressions, let’s see my comp specs:

2.5 Ghz intel P4
1024 of ram
ATIi 9500 pro with a latest drivers
Soundblaster 16 :/
Win XP

Okay, with that out of way, let’s share some moments.

Installed the game without any problems what so ever, maybe because of my new DVD-rom drive, which is fast, plus can also burn. Yay, nothing to burn though. Anyway, took about 7-10 minutes to install all three disks, which came in cool DVD case, with shiny manual. Icon appeared on my desktop, and my heart started to throb like crazy. I waited so many years for this game after all, so many years.

Anyway, menu is quite nice, but I still like the old one better, it was more steam-punked. In video options, I put everything oh high, expect AA/AS, but that’s because I don’t really care about this feature. Also turned Bloom off. So, without any delays, I started the game, off course there is a training mission, which is like Splinter Cell games, you go in one direction. Not biggie, already knew about it, at least while playing it, I got used to moving in first person view. Seeing your whole body is neat, additionally I tried out 3rd person view, didn’t really care for that, because I wanted to keep Thief feel. Anyway, graphics and art direction are beautiful, but there are still some low resolution textures here and there, but you don’t really pay attention to it, because of the shadows. I also love how Garrett casts his own shadow, very unusual to see something like that in FPS. Oh yeah, when I heard Garrett’s voice, something inside of me went crazy, and I started to scream like little girl. That voice alone makes this game a Thief game.

Well, training mission wasn’t anything special, finished it quite fast. After that we are treated with beautiful cut-scene in style of previous games. After that, it was first real mission. I might add, there are bunch of different ways to get inside of castle, it’s just fun. Took me about 2 hours to finish this mission, on expert (with reloads and everything). AI was pretty smart, much better than in old game, reacted to the torches and open doors, missing loot, etc. Game ran smooth btw.

Mission was split in two, but both chunks were pretty big, at least much bigger and more detailed than any Deus Ex 2 level. There were two transition points, it annoyed me a bit, but I already got used to it. Watch out for some secret places there :p Now, City, levels between missions, are smaller, but still fun and go foot in foot with storyline. Plus if you explore enough, you will be rewarded.

Sound is great, at least as great it can be with soundblaster 16 + headphones. I love ambient sounds, and voiceovers are mostly good, expect for some annoying female characters. Seemed like actress tried too hard to emulate a specific accent.

Atmosphere is top notch too, feels like THIEF, and it’s the most important thing. I can’t really say anything more here, you need to try out for yourself. I am also on a second mission right now, so don’t ask anything about storyline.

Now some new “features”

-Loot glint, I thought I will hate it, but actually it is VERY usefull. It’s very hard to see in the dark the difference between junk and valuable stuff, so glint helps. And it shines every 5 seconds or so, and glint itself is very small, so it’s not like a damn lighthouse.

-Arrow-tails. That blue thing behind arrows, I have no idea why it is in the game. It’s annoying, but after hour of play, you stop noticing it. Then again, I didn’t use bow so much, only to take out some torches.

-Highlighting WITH LEET NEON BLUE. Annoying as ****, to see damn door being highlighted so bright, plus corpses too. No idea who made this decision, but it’s ugly and annoying. I hope someone will be able to turn it down.

-Physics are good, at least not like Deus Ex 2. To knock something out, like a box, in Deadly Shadows, you need to run pretty fast and bump into it. I never run in this game, so I never knocked anything out by mistake. Rag-doll physics, on another hand, are blah… People “break in half” so often.

-Due to body awareness, controls feels a bit sluggish, but you get used to that too.

Well, I can’t really think straight right now, playing for 3 hours in a dark, so I will add more impression later on.

But I must say, I’m lovin’ it (yay for McDonalds marketing campaign). Playing this game makes me one happy gamer. Shame some people have installing/graphic problems with TDS.

Well, I just played Hammeritie mission, and man is that good or what. Level was pretty big, and creepy. Funny thing, when you return to the City, it changes, depending on your actions before the mission. Which is cool. Having tons of fun here, if you guys still afraid of buying it, well you missing out on a lot of Thief fun.

Ooooo! Sounds like a lot of fun. I might pick up a copy when I can get some extra cash. Is there a multiplay? If so, have you tried it? If so, can you tell us about it? If so, is it intense or do people just tend to camp in a dark corner? er.... enough with the 'if so'.....

Nope, Thief games never had any multiplayer :p For multi you need to try out new Splinter Cell, people say it's very good.

Well I got everything working in DS, and I have to say, it was worth the wait. It's Thief, plain and simple. The atmosphere is spot on, the gameplay mechanics remain true to the series (at least on expert they do), it's a beautiful game in the art and sound department, and the AI on expert is really great. For an AI example, I was walking about just minding my own business when I bumped into a chair (wasn't quite a bump, more like running into it) knocking it back onto it's hind legs. Now there were some guards about 20 feet ahead of me in a hallway. One of them heard the noise and came to investigate. I hid in the opposite corner of the room. He strolled in casually, sword still sheathed, but obviously on alert and said to his buddy "Something knocked that chair back.....wonder what it was?" So he took a look around, checked out a few shadowy spots, and then, after seeing a fat rat scurry down the hallway said "Maybe it was that rat over there...stupid rats" leaving me to myself again. It was just so cool to see the guard actually analyze his environment and come to a logical conclusion about what it must have been that tipped back the chair.

None of the changes really bother me at all. The loading zones are annoying, but they aren't awful. The loot glint, which I thought was going to turn out to be some horrible, ugly console like feature is not only unobtrusive, it's, as Mr.Reak said, really helpful. The game is really, really dark. It's much darker, I think, than Thief 1 or 2. So the glint is helpful when you can't make out the fine details between two goblets, or candlesticks.

I was really surprised at how well the city sections work out. I completed the 1st mission on expert (took me about 80 minutes) quite a while ago, but I'm still not at the second mission yet. Why not? Because I got so caught up in the mini-missions you can find all over the place in the city. I was robbing taverns, and shops, picking pockets, freeing prisoners (you'll understand that when you play), tormenting guards, listening to conversations (all of which are really well done and genuinely entertaining). The thing is, I don't have to do any of this. I know where I have to go, but on the way there I got so caught up in being a thief that time flew by and now I'll have to put the story missions on hold until tomorrow.

So putting the tech issues I had at first, Thief: DS is really a gem in my book. I can see myself playing it for a long time to come. Not only because it's great fun and would be enjoyable to replay, but because it offers quite a challenge, and presents you with so much cool stuff to partake in.

hmm, definately going to buy this then :)

i have never played a theif game, but after reading an article in PCgamer i am pretty exited. as a UK gamer i have to wait for ages ;(

*EDIT* in reply to prince of space, the game will be out on 25th of june i think.

:D im making the forum a cleaner place by recycling posts

I might pick it up. Maybe after I get Enter the Matrix.

Thief ****ing 3 baby :)

Just watched all the cutscenes from the previous games.. I'm rather pumped :D

I'm lovin it so far.

At first I thought it looked apalling until I realized that 'low texture detail" was on as a default. After that it got much better. I currently have all the details turned up and am running at 1024x768 and it runs pretty smoothly. However if I turn AA or AF on it drops to about 5 to 10 fps.

Also, anyone know what V-synch is? When I turn it off my mouse movements become really choppy.

But overall I'm pretty happy with the game. I don't care for the engine all that much, with things like low res textures and crappy characters, but the game is fun none the less. And actually it might not be the engine at all that's resonsible for the characters. It might just be the modelers and animators.

Edit: Ah, thanks badger.

Man, you made me not want to ge the game at first and now you are making me want it again, damn you!!!!... I have to learn to save
