My gun

This behaviour is what makes people quit doing something they love. Although I have to say that the model doesn't look quite good. First of all, you should spend more time checking out the referance material. Even if you didn't intend to make a replica of a real gun and took this one out of your head, this looks way off. No mather what kind of gun you're making there are some ground rules.
The one you have here is way too smooth. It doesn't look mechanical enough. You should study wires. They give away alot useful info. I almost always ask for a wireframe if I see a model I like.

What do you mean, max has issues when it comes to rotating? Are you sure you are in perspective? That just sound too odd to be true. Even though you aren't able to rotate in it, it's always in some sort of perspective mode. The render you have here is without doubt in an ortographic view.

Yes I am in perpective. I got riid of max. Only a trial anyway. I can't afford ANY modelling programs and my dad won't let me d/l them.

Maya is only 2000$ or something now while max is totally overpriced. You can always try software like Wings3d, trueSpace or other freewarepackages. Keep on modeling till you can afford one of them expensive ones...

I 2nd Wings. Wing3d is a awesome free modeling app. I've modeled all the guns for Neotokyo in it. Sadly it doesn't offer UV support but for $35 bucks you can get Ultimate Unwrap3d (www.unwrap3d.com). It's a awesome UV tool and a whole lot more.

Wings3d looks really good. I think that I, for one, will give it a go.

BTW, what do you mean by UV support?

Support for doing the texture mapping coordinates. Which is a pain in the ass to do well whatever tool you use hehe.

EDIT:
To get modeling fast in wings learn the hot keys, play with all the different tools that change depending on what mode your in (vertex, edge, face, object). I use the aim key(which aims at the element (vertex face what have you) and the axial view change keys constantly. Also going back and forth between ortho and perspective views when modeling mechanical objects helps a lot. There's no Boolean tools, the main way around this is using bridge, but the faces you bridge have to have the same number of verts etc etc. I could go on forever but it's easier to learn by doing. Good luck :)

Well Grey, the version I downloaded seems to have the ability to add UV coordinates, and even to unwrap them into a skin... is that what you meant?

Advice about using it taken... I actually had a bit of trouble figuring out how to move parts of a model in wings, until I realised that I had to use tweak and similar commands...

EDIT: I think I'll have a go at using wings to model my mod's weapons.

I have finally finished a model of some gun I created in my head. I hope you guys like it.

P.S. I would give you a better view but 3Ds Max is being problematic with rotation.

aww, its cute /me strokes little baby gun
