Some advice from my own experience: One time I had an art teacher teaching us how to draw our heads, and his main point was "use your eyes, not your brain". I ended up doing quite well with that. Well that was 7th grade and I'm in 3rd year college and that advice has still stuck with me.

Of course if "use your eyes not your brain" doesn't make any sense, just follow what Nurizeko said, it's basically the same advice. When you are learning, go to a reference (I guess screenshots of the characters if you were to do this again) and pay attention to placement, proportion, measure body parts and placement with other body parts like I do, etc. And if you decide to do something like this again following this sort of advice I'd like to see how it turns out.
