I've just finished hl2, i spent 7hours the first day and today i've spent another 5 so all together the game took me 12hours, a tad disappointing for 5years work. played on medium and didnt rush or take my time, just played it how it was meant.

I dont know if i've just got used to it but i feel it isnt that groundbreaking or great, it may be that i feel THAT's how games should be and so it isn't anything new (but it is). But yeah... dunno just feel a bit flat, might be because i looked forward to it for so long :)

Gravity gun got old pretty quick too, i mean, yeah its great fun but.... just seems like every game has one in the end lol

Levels were clever at times but a lot of the time it was still pretty obvious what you had to do. (even though lots of ppl got stuck lol) didnt really see any bugs other than the sound jutter and physics worked very well other than the odd tap to a paint can would leave loads of sparks.

Striders were more of a nuiscence than a pleasure (i know its meant like that but you also know why i expected them to be fun)
Antlions were the same, too easy to take down, and not enough of them when you controlled them.

No explaination of guns was a bit annoying, like the second fire on the I-rifle, i know now how it works but i didnt at the time.

Overall...

Graphics 7/10
Realism 9/10
(pc gamers comment: "it's crazy to think someone actually created this world, its just too good" is a bit OTT, it isnt THAT realistic, although it is THE most realistic :))
Gameplay 9/10
Scaryness 8/10
Funness 8/10
Weapons 7/10
Enemies 8/10
AI 7/10
(nt great, as when it says "enemies will use what is to hand as a weapon" that usually means a zombie will throw a box at you, the same way each time...)
Storyline 6/10
(not because it was poor just that it wasnt as expected, yep, expecting stuff only leaves for error, also it didnt fill you in on some of the best details and you had to almost make up what you thought the answer was)
Level design 9/10
(this makes the game!)

Please comment.

Kewl, everyone has a right to an opinion. A lot of it is subjective. I did have a question about your comments though:

Graphics a 7 of 10? HL2 has an excellent rendering engine (which only D3 tops technically... FarCry might be close... but that is it... and neither take into account all the interactivity), the excellent art design and direction (really fits the game well) and varied areas (a lot of places and times of day change). These things alone deserve more than a 7 IMO.

Then consider excellent character art, the tech that brings them to life (fascial animation, lip sync, body emotions, etc...), and the excellent animation--it really has no equal in these areas when compared to other games.

Those are my comments. Maybe you can answer these questions so I can understand where you are coming from:

1. Name examples of why you do not like the graphics and others games that are better in these overall.

2. What HW are you on? Settings?

I gotta agree with everything bar the graphics comments.

I'm not so sure with the graphics front - sometimes it looked so spankingly good that I was stunned, but other times I wasn't half as impressed. For example, the whole thing in the canal was amazing (tho the loading times killed the tension) but whilst at say Ravenholm I wasn't half as stunned. Maybe they just aren't as good at making stuff for low-light as they are for the broad-daylight-ness of the canal?

I too have that slightly flat feeling. Maybe it'll go away when I play it start to finish with godmode/full guns+ammo :D

Ok maybe not graphics just use of, like in half the levels you get the same repeated greys and blues and yellows, and in the bit with the rooftop striders the walls are just so non-textured.

I dont think many games beat it graphically but better usage of the source engine rendering would be nice :)

What's HW btw?

I'm running
1024*768
4x AA
16x AF
max settings

I definitely don't agree with the Graphics comments, I thought they were fantastic!!

I think that Half-Life 2 is definitely great, probably the best FPS on the PC since Half-Life 1, although maybe not as ground breaking as HL1.
