my main gripe about steam...

Whats his problem with Ram I'm running with 256mb sd ram here on windows xp with Steam running generally all the time.

Steam uses 18mb ram and 0 cpu

while my 4 internet explorer windows take 37mb, winamp another 10mb

Thank god I'm getting 256mb of 333mhz ddr ram tommorow then I can sell my SD on ebay and get another 256mb chip. w00t 512mb

No they are not. They are providing you with the option of doing that, as many people find it easier this way. You can still install your game from the CD and play it with the latest non-steam patch. You won't find any online games, but thats because everyone else has seen the benefit of steam, natch :)

Oh, and "Valve have got it sweet"??? They are providing this service for free at a cost to themselves. Tip: Engage brain before typing a post...

You're awfully confident for someone who's wrong. THe very fact that you can't find support for valve games other than through steam means there is no choice, that is what i resent.

And if you don't think valve are purely self-servicing by designing and forcing people to use steam you are a base fool. Steam is a way for valve to beat the retailers and make more money.

Steam offers nothing over WON. The only differences are that you have no choice whether or not you want the lastest patch and no choice over whether you want to use another program to play your games.

These are hardly revelations, so maybe it is you who should do the brain engaging before mindlessly supporting the actions of a company just because they made a great game.

You're wrong here: when using WON, you didn't have the choise either whether you should install the new patch or not. From the moment you wanted to play the game online, you had to be up-to-date.
Ofcourse, only playing the game SP, you needn't update. But with the introduction of the offline capabilities of steam, its just the same.
